A novel and effective method to fabricate flame retardant and smoke suppressed flexible polyurethane foam

Abstract: In the present work, chitosan and magnesium hydroxide (MH) were successfully deposited on the surface of flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF). Due to the strong interaction, the coated foam with 10.3 wt% weightgain could be prepared by constructing one chitosan layer and one MH layer. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that this coating continuously covered the substrate. The combustion properties of FPUF were investigated by cone calorimeter and smoke density tests, and the gases released during the ther… Show more

“…The increase in the number of trilayers has resulted in better thermal stability with increased char residue as given in Table S1 (a,b) (Supporting Information). The number of trilayers has a direct influence upon the % mass gain and ultimately delay the rapid thermal decomposition of FPUF . Ultrathin multilayers have significantly delayed the second stage degradation by 16–23 °C as depicted in Table S1 (a,b) (Supporting Information).…”

“…6 Additionally, it was needed to investigate the ame retardancy of rubber, aiming to meet quite a lot of areas with high ame retardancy requirements, such as aerospace, electrical insulating products, electrical wires and cables. 7,8 Adding ame retardants into rubber can effectively improve its ame retardant property. Compared with other ame retardants, the intumescent ame retardant (IFR) plays the roles of heat insulation, oxygen insulation, smoke suppression, and prevention of dripping.…”

“…Furthermore, the toxic gases and high temperature hamper humans and animals from escaping to safe place. [10][11][12] At present, numerous polyurethane foams in practical applications barely have property of ame resistance. In view of ammability control and environmental protection, the RPUFs with improved ame resistance needs to be further developed.…”
