“…This work has revealedvarious changes to the Mediterranean climate since the middle of the present century. Repapis and Philandras (1988) show some evidence from land stations for declining temperatures over the south-eastern comer of the Mediterranean during the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s, and the north-eastern region during the 1960s and 1970s. Metaxas et al (1 99 1) and Sahsamanoglou and Makrogiannis (1992) show that this decrease during the 1960s and 1970s is found in seasurface temperatures (SST) over the entire Mediterranean Sea, although it was particularly pronounced in the eastern basin.…”

“…In this paper we examine the Mediterranean record in the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set (COADS; Woodruff et al, 1987) for changes in sea-surface temperature, sea-level pressure and surface wind strength and direction, validating observed changes in pressure and wind with reference to neighbouring land stations from the World Surface Station Climatology (Spangler and Jenne, 1988). Our analysis thus uses a more extensive marine data base than previous studies and, almost uniquely, combines marine and terrestrial data.…”

“…There are a number of studies which have investigated changes in temperature and precipitation since the middle of the 20th century for eastern Mediterranean and Greece. Repapis and Philandras (1988) showed that eastern Mediterranean air temperature time series follow the Northern Hemisphere secular trend from late 19th Century to 1970s. Nevertheless the warming trend of the last 30 years that is well documented for the Northern Hemisphere and the global average appears only since early 1990s in the eastern Mediterranean region and Greece in particular (Saaroni et al, 2003;Feidas et al, 2004;Repapis et al, 2007).…”

“…There is a generalized agreement within the scientific community on the warming conditions predominant in most of the Mediterranean basin during last decades, where a general increase on average temperatures has been recorded (Repapis et al, 2004;Brunetti et al, 2006;Alpert et al, 2008;Camuffo et al, 2010;Homar et al, 2010). Nevertheless, past evolution and future projections for precipitation are more variable than those of temperature, and present a very high spatiotemporal variability (Sumner et al, 2003;Alpert et al, 2008;Philandras et al, 2011;Quintana-Seguí et al, 2011), which may create more complex drought patterns.…”
