A note on Dupuy's QJM and new square law

Abstract: SOUTH AFRICA T.N. Dupuy has developed various operations research models in an attempt to quantify lessons that can be learned from military history. We discuss two of his models, the Quantified Judgment Model (QJM), and the "new square law". The QJM was developed by Dupuy for the analysis of military operations. We point out mathematical discrepancies in a part of the model and make suggestions to remove these discrepancies. Dupuy's new square law is an attempt to modify the well-known Lanchester equations fo… Show more

“…This model involved the identification and quantification of 73 battlefield performance variables, pertaining to weapons, terrain, weather, season, air superiority, posture, mobility, vulnerability, tactical air effects and intangible factors such as leadership and morale (Dupuy, 1985(Dupuy, , 1986. While not without its critics (Brown, 1986(Brown, , 1987Geldenhuys and Botha, 1994) and extensions (Rowland, 2006), the QJM in general has remained robust under criticism (Dupuy, 1986(Dupuy, , 1987.…”

“…44 Although for different reasons not widely recognized as states, these de facto entities are said to 'internally' measure up to effective statehood. 45 Furthermore, the fact that they often entertain various diplomatic relations with recognized states and conclude treaties shows their capacity to enter into external relations. 46 The case of Somaliland is illustrative because, in contrast to other cases, it is often seen as not having violated any pre-emptory norms of international law in its (attempted) secession.…”
