A normative study of a shorter version of Raven?s progressive matrices 1938

Abstract: A shorter four-set (A, B, C, D) version of Raven's progressive matrices 1938 (PM38) has gained increasing use in neuropsychological assessment. No normative data spanning across a wide age range are, however, available. This study collected norms for the shorter version of PM38, established an inferential cut-off value and derived equivalent scores in a sample of 248 individuals from 20 to 89 years of age, evenly distributed across sex, age and education levels. Results showed significant effects of age and ed… Show more

“…There are multiple distinct relations among the entries in a given row or column of the matrix, and the participants had to identify the relations and select the response that best matched the pattern. A short form of the RAPM (Bors & Stokes, 1998;Caffarra, Vezzadini, Zonato, Copelli, & Venneri, 2003) was administered and fluid intelligence was measured as the total number of Raven items answered correctly. Participants' self-reported SAT scores were used as an index of their knowledge gained through experience, or crystallized intelligence (Cattell, 1963;Jensen, 1998).…”

“…The RPM 458 M. Newberry and R. Shuker consist of 60 black and white patterns that are completed from a multiple choice set of alternatives. The test is untimed, and items progressively increase in level of difficulty within and across sets (Caffarra, Vezzadini, Zonato, Copelli, & Venneri, 2003). An individual's total RPM score ranges from 0 to 60 and provides an index of their IA.…”

“…A control group of healthy individuals (with no Axis I and II DSM-IV diagnosis) comparable for age and sex was also included (four men and six women, aged 31-65 years mean age: 46.20 13.05). Patients' exclusion criteria were as follows: left handedness, history of neurologic diseases, other Axis I diagnosis, hospitalization in the last 12 months, patients on stable pharmacological treatment from at least 2 months, pharmacological treatment with typical antipsychotics, presence of electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities at the baseline recording, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score greater than 7, Young Mania Rating Scale greater than 7 and mental retardation (IQ < 70) measured by Raven Progressive Matrices (PM38) [19].…”
