A Next-Generation Optical Packet-Switching Node Based on Hybrid III-V/Silicon Optical Gates

Abstract: We report a hybrid silicon optical gate array based on a silicon waveguide with a III-V gain medium and two vertical grating couplers. The gates show a fast switching time, a high extinction ratio, and a positive fiber-to-fiber optical gain. The dynamic behavior of such a device is evaluated under electrically controlled gating. We further focus on a single gate performance in a packet-switched network. We demonstrate subwavelength switching operations with multiformat and multibit-rate optical packet based on… Show more

“…Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are expected to provide large cost savings and silicon photonics is a promising option providing large-scale integration of photonic components with high-volume manufacturing compatibility. Integration of silicon-based variable optical attenuator (VOA) combined with silica arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) 3 or III-V on silicon semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with siliconon-insulator (SOI)-based AWG 4,5 was proposed in order to build 1xN switching fabrics (with N+1 ports). However, a low-port-count package is desirable to overcome cost barriers in PIC module packaging.…”
