A Newly Developed Noninvasive and Mobile Pen-Shaped Meibography System

Abstract: The newly developed noninvasive mobile pen-shaped meibography system is a useful tool that provides meibomian gland images of the same quality and quantity as the noncontact meibography system equipped with a slit lamp. This new system is convenient and applicable for examination of meibomian glands in patients of all ages.

“…Therefore, noncontact meibography was performed using a mobile, pen-shaped meibography device (Meibom Pen; Japan Focus Co., Tokyo, Japan) after the upper and lower eyelids had been inverted to avoid compression of the blebs. Data collection was linked to a commercial laptop computer that used imaging software (light capture; I-O Data, Kanazawa, Japan) [26]. As shown in Fig.…”

“…After slit-lamp examination of the cornea, conjunctiva and lid margin, the upper and lower eyelids were everted and the meibomian glands were observed and photographed using a non-contact meibography (MeibomPen; Japan Focus, Tokyo, Japan) 7. Dropout or obstruction of meibomian glands was scored according to the following grades described previously (meiboscore) for each eyelid: grade 0 (no dropout of meibomian glands), grade 1 (dropout <1/3 of the total area of meibomian glands), grade 2 (dropout between 1/3 and 2/3 of total area), grade 3 (dropout >2/3) 6.…”

“…Changes in composition of meibomian lipids affect the ocular surface disorders, such as evaporative dry eye disease. Recently, non-contact infrared meibography was developed to observe the structure of the meibomian gland with no discomfort to the patient 6 7…”

“…Table 1 compares some of the commercially available devices for NIM. In 2013, to enhance portability of NIM, Arita et al developed a mobile, pen-shaped meibograph (MeibomPen) that acquired meibomian gland images of comparable quality to the NIM [43]. The MeibomPen not only allowed for ease of eyelid imaging in children [49], but also brought the entire eyelid into focus making quantification meibomian gland numbers easier.…”

“…The past four decades have seen remarkable advancements in the technology of meibography, transitioning from contact methods of eyelid transillumination biomicroscopy [40] to more advanced non-invasive methods such as non-contact infrared meibography (NIM) [43,44] and more recently, OCT meibography [31 • , 45]. Quantitative and reliable metrics are necessary clinical endpoints for clinical trials.…”
