A New Vanadium Dioxide Cathode

Abstract: We have synthesized a new form of vanadium dioxide using the hydrothermal reaction of vanadium pentoxide and lithium hydroxide in the presence of an organic templating cation. The hydrated lithium vanadium oxide formed has the simplest layered structure of any vanadium oxide, containing only V05 square pyramids whose apices alternate up and down in the layer. The lithium may be removed by electrochemical delithiation. This new compound reversibly reacts with lithium and therefore may be used as the cathode in … Show more

“…MO 2 structures based entirely on [MO 5 ] polyhedra are very rare. We are aware only of a vanadium dioxide polymorph, VO 2 (C), which is a layered compound composed of sheets of [VO 5 ] square pyramids [78,79], although full crystallographic data has not been published, possibly due to nonstoichiometry and the retention of Li or H 2 O from the synthesis route.…”

“…VO 2 (B) has been emerged as another good option as cathode material for lithium ion batteries since 1996. 98 Its structure is built up by distorted octahedral VO 6 that shares both corners and edges, where lithium ions can occupy both octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Commonly, VO 2 (B) is obtained from the reduction of potassium vanadate (K 3 VO 4 ) using potassium borohydride in aqueous media.…”

“…These compounds, with relatively open frameworks, are of particular interest as cathode materials in lithium batteries and electrochromic devices. We have also shown that the tetramethylammonium ion is capable of providing a range of new vanadium oxides, LixW2-yO4-y.H20 (Chirayil, Zavalij & Whittingham, 1996a) and (Chirayil, Zavalij & Whittingham, 1996b), and their intercalates [N(CH3)a]V4OI0 (Zavalij, Whittingham, Boylan, Pecharskii & Jacobson, 1996), [N(CH3)4]V307 (Zavaiij, Chirayil & Whittingham, 1997). This work presents the crystal structure of a new zinc hydroxide pyrovanadate, which was found during systematic investigations of the hydrothermal interactions in the system ZnC12-V205-[N(CH3)a]OH.…”
