A new two-step algorithm for ionospheric tomography solution

Abstract: Ionospheric tomography inverse algorithms are usually an ill-conditioned problem because the geometric distribution of continuously operating reference GPS stations is not ideal for this task. In order to cope with such ill-conditioning, a new tomographic algorithm, termed two-step algorithm (TSA), is presented. The electron density is estimated in two steps: Phillips smoothing method (PSM) is first used to resolve the ill-conditioned problem in the ionospheric tomography system, and then, the PSM solution is … Show more

“…The primary purpose of the function-based method is to estimate the function coefficient. By contrast, the pixel-based is based on the concept of dividing the modeling regions into equally sized pixels and assuming that the pixel points for identical pixels possess identically sized IEDs before using an inversion technique to estimate the IED (An, 2011;HernandezPajares et al, 1999;Kamp, 2013;Kunitake et al, 1995;Ma and Maruyama, 2003;Rius et al, 1997;Wen, 2007;Wen et al, 2012;Zou, 2004;Zou and Xu, 2003).…”

“…Due to the simple operation and easy solution, the voxelbased model is often exploited in ionospheric tomography studies (Wen et al 2012;Yang et al 2017;Zheng et al 2017;Jin and Li 2018). To circumvent the ill-posed problem, many algorithms have been developed over the years.…”

“…To overcome this geometric deficiency, constraints or initial conditions of the ionosphere are imposed in the reconstruction method (Wen et al 2012, Seemala et al 2014, Prol and Camargo 2016. However, the efficiency of the ionospheric tomography is an issue that depends on the assumptions made in the tomographic reconstruction method.…”
