A new theoretical method to calculate shale fracture conductivity based on the population balance equation

Abstract: a b s t r a c tShale fracture conductivity plays a critical role in determining the long term production of shale wells. High fracture conductivity is achieved by pumping more proppants and minimizing conductivity damage by fracturing fluid. Currently, fracture conductivity is either measured in laboratory following ISO 13503-5 or calculated using correlations derived from extensive laboratory tests by regression analysis. There is a need for a handy and practical tool to calculate shale fracture conductivity … Show more

“…According to the Carman–Kozeny model, fracture permeability is a function of the porosity, aperture diameter, and tortuosity ( Formula 7 ), which should be dynamically corrected due to proppant embedment and deformation: 22 in which k is permeability (μm 2 ), ϕ is the porosity (dimensionless), r is the aperture diameter (m), and τ is the tortuosity (dimensionless).…”

“…Furthermore, the fracture conductivity sharply decreases. 26 Desouky et al improved the rock strength through mineral alteration to maintain long-term fracture conductivity. 27 The filling property of proppants is considered the main factor influencing the fracture permeability in fractures with sufficient proppants.…”
