A New System, the LipiFlow, for the Treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Abstract: The LipiFlow System was significantly more effective than iHeat WC. These results support its safety and effectiveness in the treatment of MGD and dry eye symptoms.

“…In addition to eyelid masks, promising new eyelid warming technologies include steam [17,19,34,35], thermal [36][37][38][39] and chemically activated disposable sachets [40]. Aside from the effect on the meibum, warm compresses can also transiently degrade vision from the light pressure of the compress [41].…”

“…A device recently approved by the FDA, continuous controlled thermal compression (Lipiflow SystemÔ), liquefies the meibomian gland secretion and then expresses the material. 99,100 Although this treatment has been noted (observational studies only) to have an extended duration of effect in some cases, further evaluation and controlled comparative clinical trials will be needed to validate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness for such therapy. 101 When closure or partial closure of the eyelid is indicated for short periods of time, botulinum toxin injection has been used.…”

“…The original prospective open-label randomized study, funded by the manufacturer, TearScience Ò , compared a 12-minute LipiFlow Ò treatment (in 69 patients) and control treatment (in 70 patients) with a commercially available iHeat warm compress system for 5 min. The authors concluded that the LipiFlow Ò treatment group had a statistically significantly improved MG secretion quality and tear break-up times from baseline to both 2 and 4 weeks [18]. One of the original authors later published a study following 18 patients over 12 months, which suggested that a single 12-minute LipiFlow Ò treatment offered an effective treatment for evaporative dry eye and MGD, even after 1 year [19].…”
