Gears are foundational tools used to transmit or modify mechanical energy or motion. Implementing gears into planar linkage mechanisms is less common but can be a similarly valuable technique that takes advantage of the high efficiency of gears while producing complex and precise motions. While recent numerical methods for designing these geared planar linkage mechanisms (GPLMs) have proliferated in the literature, analytical approaches have their merits and have received less attention. Here, an analytical alternative is presented as a modification of the complex-number loop-based synthesis method for designing multiloop mechanisms. Some of the base topologies for geared dyad, triad, and quadriad chains are presented, along with a numerical example demonstrating the solution procedure’s effectiveness.

The paper presents general theory of structural synthesis of the self-aligning lever mechanisms consisting of closed circuits without harmful excess connections and operating in the given full space with the number of freedom degrees of h (1 ? h ? 6). This theory includes new analytical structural dependences of the input and output parameters to construct mechanisms missing the redundant connections and designed for directed structural synthesis and analysis, taking into account the new trigonometric objective function of the structural synthesis, angular structural equations and extended structural mathematical model of all possible self-aligning mechanisms. Effectiveness of the structural synthesis proposed general theory was confirmed by examples of structures (at the inventions level) built on the basis of cylindrical hinges with the different possible mutual arrangement of their axes. They include vibration mechanism with the elastic dynamic bonds, space flat manipulator of the spatial mixer, folding articulated manipulator, multi-capacity turbulent mixer and spatial parallelogram manipulator without special uncontrolled and “dead” positions. Operability of all synthesized lever mechanisms designed to operate in the homogeneous and mixed spaces was theoretically confirmed according to a new universal (unified) structural formula for calculating the mechanism mobility, as well as by the prepared experimental models of the operating mechanisms made on the basis of new single-moving rotational kinematic pairs.

Structural synthesis of various mechanisms is the first stage in creating reliable and efficient designs of mechanisms and mechanical drives for operation in different areas of the mechanical engineering. On the one hand, structural synthesis of various mobile mechanical systems is the most complex and problematic stage in their design due to the unknown and large number (tens of thousands) of possible structural solutions, and on the other hand, it is the most important stage that determines functional characteristics and service life of the created mechanisms. The paper presents examples of creating the non-redundant mechanisms based on the structural mathematical model integer solutions of all possible multi-loop mechanisms with complex hinges of different multiplicity. Structural synthesis and substantiation of the combined cylindrical hinges effectiveness were performed in creation of new flat and spatial structures of the multi-link mechanical devices with a different number of degrees of freedom, made in the form of multilateral robot gripper, lifting mechanism, articulated lever manipulators and mobile mechanical system of the active seismic building protection.
