A new species of Nesotanais (Crustacea, Tanaidacea) from Japan, with a key to species and a note on male chelipeds

Abstract: The new species Nesotanais ryukyuensis sp. n. is described from Japan. Nesotanais ryukyuensis most closely resembles N. rugula Bamber, Bird & Angsupanich, 2003, but can be distinguished by the length of simple seta on maxillipedal basis and the shape of cheliped in male. A key to species of the genus Nesotanais is given. The male chelipeds of N. rugula are redescribed. The serial ridges on the inner surface of the chelipedal propodus and dactylus in Nesotanais ryukyuensis and N. rugula are likely to be str… Show more

“…Most tanaidaceans are marine, having been reported from around the world, ranging in depth from coastal areas (1-2 m) to the deep-sea bottom at about 9000 m (cf. Kudinova-Pasternak, 1972); a few freshwater and brackish species are also known (Kakui et al, 2010). At present, more than 1000 extant and 13 fossil species are classified into 35 families (Anderson, 2010;Larsen, 2011).…”

“…Two nototanaids are known from Japan. One is Nesotanais ryukyuensis Kakui, Kajihara and Mawatari, 2010, which was described from a brackish habitat on Okinawa Island and which has also been collected from Iriomote and Amami-Oshima Islands ( Fig. 1B; Kakui et al 2010;Kakui unpubl.…”

“…Orientation and terminology here follow Larsen (2003), except that the term "plumose sensory seta" (PSS; Bird 2011) was used instead of "broom seta", and the term "steptipped plumose seta" (Kakui et al 2010) was used. We proposed two new terms, "serrate-tipped curved-spiniform seta(e)" and "serrate-tipped spiniform seta(e)" for the setae found in the inner dorsodistal/dorsosubdistal regions of the maxillipedal endite.…”
