A new species of Pseudopaludicola (Anura, Leiuperidae) from western Piauí State, Northeast Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Pseudopaludicola from western Piauí State, Brazil, in the Cerrado domain is described. Pseudopaludicola parnaiba sp. nov. is a member of the genus Pseudopaludicola, on the basis of the presence of one hypertrophied antebrachial tubercle, posterolateral process of the hyoid outlined and epicoracoid cartilages slightly overlapped. The new species is characterized by an advertisement call composed of 6-46 non-pulsed notes per call and dominant frequency of 4794 ± 296 Hz, which supports an indepen… Show more

“…Sesamoids have been identified in the hands and feet of a variety of anurans and associated with various tendons [Pipidae (Olson, 2000), Leptodactylus fuscus group (Ponssa et al, 2010); Arthroleptidae (Laurent, '86;Scott, 2005), Pseudopaludicola spp. (Cardozo and Suarez, 2012;Roberto et al, 2013)]. There are anurans where only one or two tendons develop sesamoids, such as the Ceratophryidae, and there are sesamoids irregularly found in skeletal preparations (Fig.…”

“…However, this richness is underestimated since recent descriptions of several new species have been published (e.g. Giugliano et al 2013;Teixeira Jr et al 2013;Roberto et al 2013;Carvalho and Giaretta 2013). One of the main factors influencing high local and regional diversity in the Cerrado herpetofauna is the horizontal habitat stratification, with a wide range of different vegetation types (from forests to open grasslands) occurring side by side in the landscape, each one of them harboring a different set of species (Colli et al 2002;Nogueira et al 2009).…”
