ResumoO trabalho apresenta a flora do gênero Philodendron (Araceae) no estado do Paraná. Foram registradas 13 espécies, incluindo duas espécies recentemente descritas e três novos registros para o estado: P. appendiculatum, P. bipinnatifidum, P. camposportoanum, P. corcovadense, P. crassinervium, P. eximium, P. loefgrenii, P. meridionale, P. missionum, P. obliquifolium, P. propinquum, P. rheophyticum AbstractThis work presents the flora of the genus Philodendron (Araceae) in the Paraná state, Brazil. Thirteen species were recorded, two of which are new: P. appendiculatum, P. bipinnatifidum, P. camposportoanum, P. corcovadense, P. crassinervium, P. eximium, P. loefgrenii, P. meridionale, P. missionum, P. obliquifolium, P. propinquum, P. rheophyticum and P. roseopetiolatum. The Philodendron species were found in the three main formations of Atlantic forest in the Paraná state: five species in the Seasonal Semideciduous Forest, seven species in the Araucaria Forest and in the Ombrophilous Dense Forest, which recorded the major representativeness, 11 species were recorded. Moreover, Ombrophilous Dense Forest showed a high endemism, with four exclusive species to this formation. Three species were considered critically endangered in the Paraná state: P. camposportoanum, P. eximium and P. roseopetiolatum. We present an identification key, photos, and illustrations of the diagnostic characters and taxonomic comments for each species.

BackgroundPhilodendron is the second largest genus of Araceae, being highly diverse in the Atlantic Forest biome, with nearly one third of the Brazilian species occurring in Southern Brazil, particularly in Rio de Janeiro state. During a local inventory in Silva Jardim municipality, we found a peculiar population of Philodendron growing in lowland rainforest.ResultsAfter morphological analysis and comparisons with similar species, the population proved to be a new undescribed species of subgenus Philodendron section Macrobelium.ConclusionsThe new species, named Philodendron luisae, is here described, illustrated and compared to morphologically close species.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s40529-015-0082-x) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Philodendron is a species-rich Neotropical lineage that diverged from Adelonema during the late Oligocene. Within Philodendron, the three subgenera currently accepted are recovered in two lineages: one contains the subgenera Meconostigma and Pteromischum and the other contains subgenus Philodendron. The lineage containing subgenera Meconostigma and Pteromischum underwent a consistent diversification rate. By contrast, a diversification rate upshift occurred within subgenus Philodendron ~12 mya. This diversification rate upshift is associated with the species radiation of the most speciose subgenus within Philodendron. The sections accepted within subgenus Philodendron are not congruent with the clades recovered. Instead, the clades are geographically defined.
