A new species of Limatulichthys Isbrücker & Nijssen (Loricariidae, Loricariinae) from the western Guiana Shield

Abstract: Limatulichthys nasarcus n. sp. is described as a new species based on 15 specimens from the Ventuari and Caura Rivers in Southern Venezuela. The new species can be distinguished from its only congener, L. griseus, by the presence of anterior abdominal plates half the size of those at center of abdomen (vs. plates similar in size); distinct spots less than half of diameter of naris across entire dorsum, including snout and head (vs. indistinct dorsal spots larger or equal than diameter of naris); lateral portio… Show more

“…cuffyi . Harttia merevari Provenzano, Machado‐Allison, Chernoff, Willink & Petry 2005, Limatulichthys nasarcus Londoño‐Burbano et al ., 2014 and Pseudolithoxus anthrax (Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000) are recorded from the Caura and the Ventuari rivers, and Avalithoxus jantjae (Lujan, 2008) is known to occur in the upper Ventuari River. Congeners of the above‐mentioned species occur on the opposite side of the Guiana Shield, but there are no records of these occurring in intervening drainages.…”

“…These include: Baryancistrus demantoides , Baryancistrus beggini , Hemiancistrus subviridis , Hypancistrus contradens , Hypancistrus furunculus , Hypancistrus lunaorum , Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias, Leporacanthicus triactis , Hypancistrus vandragti , Peckoltia lineola , Pseudolithoxus tigris , and Pseudancistrus pectegenitor (Armbruster 2008, Armbruster et al 2007, Lujan and Armbruster 2011, Lujan and Birindelli 2011, Lujan et al 2007, 2009, Werneke et al 2005). At least two other species have a disjunct distribution inclusive of the Ventuari River and the Caura River but are absent from intervening reaches of the Orinoco River main channel ( Limatulichthys nasarcus , and Pseudolithoxus anthrax ; Lujan and Birindelli 2011, Londoño-Burbano et al 2014), and in four of these instances there is strong morphological or molecular evidence that sister species are allopatrically distributed upstream vs. downstream of the confluence of the Orinoco and Atabapo/Guaviare/Inirida rivers. In addition to the Peckoltia lujani / Peckoltia wernekei pair, there is Hypancistrus debilittera and Hypancistrus furunculus , Pseudolithoxus kelsorum and Pseudolithoxus tigris , and Hemiancistrus sp.…”

“…The specimen had been identified there as Limatulichthys sp., but we refer to the fish to L. griseus as reported by Londoño-Burbano et al (2014), as it does not disagree with their concept of that species.…”
