A new species of Leptolalax (Anura: Megophryidae) from northern Vietnam

Abstract: We describe a new, medium-sized Leptolalax species from Vietnam. Leptolalax petrops sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of having a medium-sized body (23.6-27.6 mm in 21 adult males, 30.3-47.0 mm in 17 adult females), immaculate white chest and belly, no distinct black markings on the head, highly tuberculate skin texture, toes lacking webbing and with narrow lateral fringes, and a call consisting of an average of four notes and a dominant frequency of 5.6-6.4 kHz (at 24.5-25.3 °C). U… Show more

“…Their results also rejected the hypothesis that Leptolalax consists of two subgenera as proposed by Delorme et al (2006) and Dubois et al (2010). At present, the genus Leptobrachella contains sixty-six species, widely distributed from southern China west to northeastern India and Myanmar, through mainland Indochina to peninsular Malaysia and the island of Borneo (Frost 2017; Nguyen et al 2018; Rowley et al 2016, 2017; Yang et al 2016; Yuan et al 2017). They are commonly known as Asian leaf litter frogs.…”

“…With the evidence of both morphological and phylogenetic analyses, 15 cryptic species of the genus Leptobrachella have been discovered and described since 2010 (Frost 2017; Rowley et al 2016, 2017; Yang et al 2016; Yuan et al 2017). With the description of L.yunkaiensis sp.…”

“…The sonograms and waveforms were generated by Raven Pro 1.5 software (The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, available from http://www.birds.cornell.edu/raven ) with Fast Fourier samples 512 points and overlap 50%, from which all parameters and characters were measured as following Rowley et al (2012) . Comparative advertisement call characters for congeners in the subgenus Lalos species were taken from references, with advertisement calls known for 18 out of the 38 known species of in the subgenus Lalos ( Matsui, 2006 ; Rowley & Cao, 2009 ; Rowley et al, 2010a ; Rowley et al, 2010b ; Rowley et al, 2010c ; Rowley et al, 2011 ; Rowley et al, 2012 ; Rowley, Dau & Nguyen, 2013 ; Rowley et al, 2015a ; Rowley et al, 2016 ; Rowley et al, 2017 ; Poyarkov et al, 2015 ; Rowley, Dau & Cao, 2017 ).…”

“…Total DNA was extracted from muscle tissue using standard phenol-chloroform extraction ( Hillis et al, 1996 ), followed by isopropanol precipitation. We amplified a 454–474-bp length fragment of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene, which has been successfully applied for DNA-identification of cryptic diversity within the genus Leptolalax ( Poyarkov et al, 2015a ; Rowley et al, 2015a , 2016 , 2017a , 2017b ). The 16S rRNA-gene fragment was amplified using ScreenMix-HS (Evrogen, Russia) following the manufacturer’s instructions.…”

“…Knowledge about Leptolalax species diversity has strikingly increased in recent decades, from only four in 1983 ( Dubois, 1983 ) to 53 recognized species at present, 31 of which (~60% of total species) have been described in the last 10 years ( Frost, 2017 ). In Vietnam, the number of Leptolalax species has increased remarkably from six ( Nguyen et al, 2009 ) to 23 species ( Rowley et al, 2016 , 2017a , 2017b ) within the last decade. However, considering the high morphological similarity of many species within the genus ( Rowley et al, 2016 ) and the poor level of biological exploration of many parts of Indochina, additional taxa likely remain undescribed.…”
