A new species ofMelampsorarust onSalix elbursensisfrom Iran

Abstract: Summary A rust fungus was found causing stem cankers on 1‐ to 5‐year‐old stems of Salix elbursensis in the north west of Iran. The rust also forms uredinia on leaves and flowers of the host willow. Light and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the new rust is morphologically distinct from several Melampsora species occurring on the willows taxonomically close to S. elbursensis, but indistinguishable from Melampsora larici‐epitea. Examination of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosom… Show more

“…ITS rDNA is an abbreviation for the Internal Transcribed Spacer of the DNA region that codes for ribosomal RNA and has been applied frequently to the phylogenetic analysis of Melampsora willow rust taxa (Kenaley et al 2014;Zhao et al 2013;Benett et al 2011;Damadi et al 2011;Liesebach & Zaspel 2005;Smith et al 2004). ITS rDNA is not the only sequence marker that can be used for phylogenetic analysis, but in the fungal kingdom it is the most frequently used marker for the distinction of species, since the sequence variation within a species is lower than between the species (Begerow et al 2010;Schoch et al 2012).…”

“…However, a problem remains: M. epitea consists of different entities (Damadi et al 2011), and further delimitation of the taxonomic status within this group is urgently needed.…”

“…More than half of Melampsora spp. have been described on Salicaceae, which comprises the genus Salix (willows) and the genus Populus (poplas) [ 2 3 ]. Salix koreensis Andersson, commonly known as Korean willow, is a deciduous, broad-leaved tree in the family of Salicaceae, and is distributed in East Asia, including Korea and China.…”
