Most of the studies on chiropteran endoparasites in Argentina come from the Central and Northeast regions of the country, and there is only one parasitological study of bats from the Argentinean Patagonia. The aim of this study is to describe the helminth fauna of 42 Myotis chiloensis, comparing the composition and the structure of the endoparasite communities between two populations, inhabiting different environments in Andean humid forest and the ecotone between forest and Patagonian steppe. A total of 697 helminths were recovered from 33 bats: five species of trematodes, Ochoterenatrema sp., Paralecithodendrium sp., Parabascus limatulus, Parabascus sp., and Postorchigenes cf. joannae, two species of cestodes, Vampirolepis sp. 1 and Vampirolepis sp. 2, and three species of nematodes, Allintoshius baudi, Physaloptera sp., and Physocephalus sp. All the helminths, but Physocephalus sp., were recovered from the small and large intestine. This is the first survey of M. chiloensis’ helminth fauna. All the species, but A. baudi, represent new records of helminths in Patagonian bats. There were differences of parasite species richness between localities and both bat populations share almost half of the endoparasite species. Different preferences for intestinal regions were found for three species of trematodes in the bats from the site in the humid forest. Myotis chiloensis serves as both a definitive and intermediate host for endoparasites in the Patagonian ecosystem.

: During a long-term study on biodiversity of bats in the Yungas and Entre Ríos provinces, 1,304 specimens of bats included in the families Noctilionidae, Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae, and Molossidae were collected and checked for filarioids. Litomosoides molossi Esslinger, 1973 was recovered from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of Molossus molossus (prevalence [P] = 6.4%); Litomosoides chandleri Esslinger, 1973 from Artibeus planirostris (P = 6.9%), Sturnira oporaphilum (P = 66.6%), Sturnira erythromos (P = 23.8%), Sturnira lilium (P = 7.2%), and Eumops perotis (P = 50%); and Litomosoides saltensis n. sp. was collected from Eptesicus furinalis (P = 1.7%). In this paper, we emend the description of L. molossi; describe a new species, Litomosoides saltensis n. sp., on the basis of 1 female specimen; and report for the first time L. molossi and L. chandleri parasitizing Argentinean bats, expanding the host and locality records. Litomosoides molossi exhibits a slender buccal capsule, with an anterior segment transparent, and the posterior chitinous portion displays 2 thickenings in the first third; possesses 1 dorsal prominent cephalic papilla and 4 labial papillae distributed around the mouth; cuticle with lateral punctuations all along the hypodermic chords in both sexes; and male with area rugosa and tail without cloacal papillae. In L. chandleri, the lateral punctuations are distributed on the posterior extremity of the body in both sexes. Litomosoides saltensis n. sp. displays a thick buccal capsule with a posterior segment well cuticularized, possessing 2 thickenings in the anterior half; 4 labial and 2 ventral cephalic papillae; a globular vulva located anterior to the esophagus-intestine junction; cuticle with lateral punctuations in the posterior extremity of the body; and tail with salient phasmids. We also provide a taxonomic key for the identification of the Litomosoides sp. of bat dwelling. Long-term studies and large sample sizes are needed to detect the presence of Litomosoides sp. in bats, in contrast to the findings in cricetid rodents, which seem to be more frequently collected.

En el presente trabajo se abordan aspectos taxonómicos y ecológicos de los helmintos parásitos asociados a 12 especies de tres familias de murciélagos de 11 localidades de la provincia de Corrientes y una de Misiones: Eumops patagonicus, Eumops perotis, Molossops temminckii, Molossus molossus, Molossus rufus (Molossidae), Artibeus lituratus, Desmodus rotundus, Platyrrhinus lineatus, Sturnira lilium (Phyllostomidae), Eptesicus furinalis, Myotis albescens y Myotis cf nigricans (Vespertilionidae). Se describió la presencia y caracterizaron morfológicamente 12 taxones de helmintos: dos especies de cestodes Vampirolepis guarany y V. cf macroti (Hymenolepididae), siete especies de digeneos Anenterotrema eduardocaballeroi, A. liliputianun (Anenterotrematidae), Gymnoacetabulum talavarensis, Ochoterenatrema labda, Paralecithodendrium aranhai (Lecithodendriidae), Limatulum oklahomense (Phaneropsolidae), Urotrema scabridum (Urotrematidae) y tres taxones de nematodes Anoplostrongylus sp. (Trichostrongylidae), Pterygodermatites sp. (Rictulariidae) y Capillaria sp. (Trichuridae). Para cada taxón se elaboró una ficha taxonómica y un mapa de distribución a fin de visualizar los registros previos y el aporte de este estudio. Se efectuó la modificación parcial del inventario actual que compendia los helmintos parásitos de murciélagos de la región neotropical y se elaboró un inventario sobre los helmintos parásitos de murciélagos de Argentina. Se evaluaron 212 murciélagos, cuya prevalencia general de infección parasitaria fue 61,3%. Se observó que U. scabridum es la especie con mayor distribución hospedatoria, estando presente en seis especies de murciélagos de las familias Molossidae (E. patagonicus, M. temminckii, M. molossus y M. rufus) y Vespertilionidae (M. albescens y M. cf nigricans), al contrario A. liliputianum y Pterygodermatites sp. estuvieron presentes en una sola especie hospedadora (M. rufus y E. patagonicus respectivamente). A excepción de A. liliputianum, se amplía el rango de especies hospedadoras de todas las especies de helmintos hallados. Respecto a los cestodes se registran nueva asociación entre V. guarany y A. lituratus y entre Vampirolepis cf macroti y E. furinalis. En los digeneos se registran cuatro nuevas asociaciones entre O. labda y E. patagonicus, M. temminckii, M. rufus, M. albescens; dos entre U. scabridum y E. patagonicus, M. albescens; dos entre G. talavarensis y E. patagonicus, M. albescens; dos entre P. aranhai y E. patagonicus, Myotis cf nigricans; dos entre L. oklahomense y M. rufus,M. albescens y una entre A. eduardocaballeroi, M. temminckii. En cuanto a los nematodes se registran cuatro nuevas asociaciones entre Anoplostrongylus sp. y E. patagonicus, E. perotis, M. rufus, E. furinalis; tres nuevas asociaciones entre Capillaria sp. y M. temminckii, M. rufus, S. lilium y una entre Pterygodermatites sp. y E. patagonicus. Al orientar estos resultados con una perspectiva regional, se pone de relieve la contribución del presente estudio al conocimiento parasitológico de los murciélagos de Argentina elevando el número de especies de helmintos conocidas para el país de 20 a 25 y enriqueciendo el inventario faunístico de helmintos asociados a nueve especies de murciélagos con 23 nuevas asociaciones. La continuidad y profundización del estudio taxonómico y la aproximación en las estimaciones ecológicas, como fueron desarrolladas en esta investigación, permiten avanzar en el conocimiento y generar las bases para el estudio sobre la relación parásito/hospedador/ambiente y su impacto en la fauna parasitaria de animales silvestres, domésticos e incluso el hombre.
