A New Species ofBiacantha(Nematoda: Molineidae), a Parasite of the Common Vampire Bat from the Yungas, Argentina

Abstract: A new species of Biacantha Wolfgang, 1954 (Nematoda: Molineidae), is described from the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus Geoffroy and St. Hilaire, 1810, from northwest Argentina. Biacantha normaliae n. sp. Oviedo, Ramallo, and Claps, is characterized by the disposition and number of ridges of the synlophe, the excretory pore located on a knob, 2 lateral processes on the tail of females, the male caudal bursa morphology, and lack of gubernaculum. This is the first species of nematode described in a vampire… Show more

“…Studies on chiropteran endoparasites are limited around the world, which means that the diversity of bat's parasites is probably underestimated ( Lord et al, 2012 , Portes Santos and Gibson, 2015 ). Most of the studies in Argentina come from the Central and Northeast regions of the country, where 17 species of nematodes, 12 of trematodes, and four of cestodes have been reported ( Boero and Delpietro, 1970 , Lunaschi, 2002a , Lunaschi, 2002b , Lunaschi, 2004 , Lunaschi, 2006 , Lunaschi et al, 2003 , Drago et al, 2007 , Lunaschi and Drago, 2007 , Ramallo et al, 2007 , Lunaschi and Notarnicola, 2010 , Oviedo et al, 2009 , Oviedo et al, 2010 , Oviedo et al, 2012 , Oviedo et al, 2016 , Fugassa, 2015 , Portes Santos and Gibson, 2015 , Milano, 2016 ) ( Table 1 ). There is only one parasitological study of bats from Argentinean Patagonia, describing the trichostrongylid nematode, Allintoshius baudi , from Myotis aelleni collected in El Hoyo de Epuyén, Chubut province ( Vaucher and Durette-Desset, 1980 ).…”

“…In Argentina, data on parasites from bats are scarce. Most of the records correspond to trematodes (Lunaschi, 2002(Lunaschi, , 2004(Lunaschi, , 2006Lunaschi et al, 2003;Lunaschi and Notarnicola, 2010), and only 3 reported nematodes, including Allintoshius baudi Vaucher and Durette Desset, 1980 (Ornithostrongylidae) described from Myotis aelleni Baud from Patagonia, Cheiropteronema striatum Oviedo, Ramallo and Claps, 2010 (Molineidae) parasitizing Artibeus planirostris (Spix), and Biacantha normaliae Oviedo, Ramallo, Claps, and Miotti, 2012 in Desmodus rotundus (E.
