A new species of Horismenus Walker (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) from ootheca of Liturgusa Saussure (Mantodea, Liturgusidae) from Central Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Horismenus Walker, H. liturgusae Hansson & Schoeninger (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), is described from material reared from an ootheca of an unidentified mantid species of genus Liturgusa Saussure (Mantodea: Liturgusidae). The new species is compared to H. argus Hansson, a species it is very similar to. Horismenus liturgusae sp. n. is gregarious and 49 adult specimens developed in the ootheca. This is the first record of a Horismenus species parasitizing mantids, and the first record of a Horisme… Show more

“…So far only three records of parasitoid wasps have been reported for the genus Liturgusa, and therefore new information about parasitic wasps is especially important. Ehrman (2002) mentioned an unidentified hymenoptera as parasitoid of Liturgusa; Hansson, et al (2014), reported and newly described H. liturgusae from Brazil as a parasitoid of an unidentified species of the genus Liturgusa. Finally, Santos Murgas et al (2019), reported a species of Anastatus sp.…”

“…The genus Horismenus Walker (1843) is a predominantly Neotropical parasitic wasp group (Kenyon et al 2015) which currently includes more than 400 species (Hansson 2009;Kenyon et al 2015). The species are parasitoids or hyperparasitoids on a variety of hosts, including mantids (Hansson 2009;Hansson et al 2014). Records of mantid parasitoids are generally scarce, and this is especially true and evident in the Neotropics where few reports have been published (Ehrman 2002;Rivera 2003;Hansson et al 2014;Martínez et al 2017;Falcon and Padrón 2019;Santos Murgas et al 2019).…”

“…Horismenus Walker, 1843, with about 420 species, is one of the largest Eulophidae groups and its species act as primary or secondary parasitoid of insects and arachnids (Noyes, 2018;Morales-Silva et al, 2019), mainly in tropical America (Hansson, 2009). Most records mention Horismenus as primary parasitoids, but at least 14 of its species act as secondary parasitoids of Braconidae, mainly of Microgastrinae species (Hansson et al, 2014;Pikart et al, 2015). Thirty-nine species of Horismenus are reported in Brazil (Hansson, 2009;Hansson et al, 2014;Pikart et al, 2015).…”

“…Rio Grande do Norte has nearly 95% of its area covered with Brazilian Dry Forest (Caatinga biome) and little is known about the entomofauna associated with that type of vegetation. Hansson (CarroLL 1978;de santis 1980;hansson 2004, 2010Perioto et al 2011;hansson et al 2014). Amazonas is totally covered by Amazon forest and little is known about the Eulophidae fauna associated with that rainforest.…”
