A new species of Dianthus (Caryophyllaceae) from Antalya, South Anatolia, Turkey

Abstract: Dianthus multiflorus from Gazipaşa (Antalya), south Anatolia (Turkey), is described as a new annual species with verrucose calyx. The morphological differences from the species within the same group with Dianthus multiflorus, which are Dianthus aydogdui, Dianthus cyri and Dianthus tripunctatus, are discussed. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) threat category and observations on the ecology of the populations are noted. The karyology and seed micromorphology of Dianthus multiflorus and D… Show more

“…In recent years, 16 new species and 4 new records were added to the Turkish Dianthus. On the other hand, it was determined that 5 species are not grown in Turkey (Gemici & Leblebici, 1995;Menemen & Hamzaoğlu, 2000;Özhatay & Kültür, 2006;Vural, 2008;Yılmaz et al, 2011;İlçim et al, 2013;Hamzaoğlu et al, 2014;2015a;2015b;2015c;2018;Hamzaoğlu & Koç, 2015;2018a;2018b;2019a;2019b;2019c;Deniz et al, 2016;Oskay, 2018). As a result of these studies, total species number of the genus Dianthus in Turkey has reached 82, of which 43 are endemic, so that the endemism rate is about 52 %.…”

“…Dianthus is native to Asia and Europe [23] and a few species are known from Africa and America [24]. It consists of 600 species, among which 78-84 species are recorded for flora of Turkey [25][26][27]. An ongoing research on barcoding of Dianthus taxa in Turkey and adjacent regions face to some challenges and gives some insights for methodology.…”
