Abstract. For several recent years Faculty of Energy and Fuels of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow conduct intensive studies on the occurrence of mercury contained in thermal and coking coals, as well as on the possible reduction of fossil-fuel mercury emissions. This research focuses, among others, on application of sorbents for removal of mercury from flue gases. In this paper we present the methodology for testing mercury adsorption using various types of sorbents, in laboratory conditions. Our model assumes burning a coal sample, with a specific mercury content, in a strictly determined time period and temperature conditions, oxygen or air flow rates, and the flow of flue gases through sorbent in a specific temperature. It was developed for particular projects concerning the possibilities of applying different sorbents to remove mercury from flue gases. Test stand itself is composed of a vertical pipe furnace inside which a quartz tube was mounted for sample burning purposes. At the furnace outlet, there is a heated glass vessel with a sorbent sample through which flue gases are passing. Furnace allows burning at a defined temperature. The exhaust gas flow path is heated to prevent condensation of the mercury vapor prior to contact with a sorbent. The sorbent container is positioned in the heating element, with controlled and stabilized temperature, which allows for testing mercury sorption in various temperatures. Determination of mercury content is determined before (coal and sorbent), as well as after the process (sorbent and ash). The mercury balance is calculated based on the Hg content determination results. This testing method allows to study sorbent efficiency, depending on sorption temperature, sorbent grain size, and flue-gas rates.

Total gaseous mercury (TGM) was continuously measured in 2009 and 2012, at a coastal site on the Mediterranean Sea (La Seyne-sur-Mer, France). Air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and chemical parameters (O 3 , CO, NO x and PM 10 ) were also measured as tracers of atmospheric pollution. Average TGM concentrations did not differ between the two years, 2.20 ± 0.54 and 2.16 ± 0.60 ng m -3 for 2009 and 2012 respectively. Diurnal variations of TGM were observed for both years and linked to local industrial or urban activities. Furthermore, a clear seasonal trend was observed, with TGM minima in summer and maxima in winter. This seasonality is common to several air pollutants, like the result of the variation in the dispersion of pollutants in the boundary layer and higher photochemical activity in summer. The highest TGM concentrations (> 3 ng m -3 ) were associated with air masses originating over urban and industrial areas of the Rhône Valley and local/regional anthropogenic sources. The influence of polluted air masses from these local/regional sources was confirmed by the significantly positive correlations between TGM and CO, NO x and PM 10 . We demonstrate that polluted air masses from nearby urban and industrial regions are an important source of TGM to Mediterranean coastal areas, rather than volatilization from the sea surface.

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic metal, which is known as a global pollutant due to its ability to undergo long-range transport in the atmosphere. Methylated mercury can pose serious adverse effects on human health and environment. Mercury is emitted into the atmosphere by various natural and anthropogenic sources. The largest anthropogenic source of mercury is coal combustion, which contributes ~62% of global emissions. Total global emissions of atmospheric mercury are estimated to be 5600 Mg/year from natural and anthropogenic sources, respectively, contributing around 37% and 63% of total atmospheric mercury. About 40% of global anthropogenic emissions are contributed by East and Southeast Asia with the largest emissions from China (75%) followed by South America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Latter regions are mainly responsible due to increase in artisanal and small scale gold mining. The present estimates of mercury emissions have large uncertainties in global budget, which are mainly due to lack of knowledge of mercury exchange between various components of ecosystem with its speciation in spatial and temporal distribution. Special efforts are needed in the regions of growing economy especially in South Asia where atmospheric mercury is almost unattempted. In order to reduce uncertainties and get more realistic emission figures, there is need to develop an extensive monitoring network to measure various forms of mercury in air, soil and aquatic systems in south Asia. Controlling the emissions of global atmospheric mercury is a big challenge to the scientists and policymakers. Probably, it can be achieved by focusing on implementation of the available technologies and by developing new technologies for mercury removal through developing an extensive partnership between industries and governmental organizations.
