A new perspective on universal preconception care in China

Abstract: Many risk factors associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes can be identified and modified preconceptionally. Despite a broad consensus that preconception care should be provided to all couples of reproductive age, it has not been integrated in routine healthcare. “…This study utilised data from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project (NFPHEP), a nation-wide, population-based cross-sectional, study that was conducted between 2010-12 in 220 rural counties located in 31 provinces and municipalities of China. 17 The Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission and Ministry of Finance launched NFPHEP in 2010, providing 19 preconception health service items involving health education, health examination, risk assessment and medical consultation to married couples of reproductive age (21-49 years) planning a pregnancy within the next 6 months.
