A new on-line resource for psycholinguistic studies

Abstract: Picture naming is a widely used technique in psycholinguistic studies. Here, we describe new online resources that our project has compiled and made available to researchers on the world wide web at http://crl.ucsd.edu/~aszekely/ipnp/. The website provides access to a wide range of picture stimuli and related norms in seven languages. Picture naming norms, including indices of name agreement and latency, for 520 black-and-white drawings of common objects and 275 concrete transitive and intransitive actions are… Show more

“…533 black-and-white line drawings of common objects were selected from various picture databases (Bonin et al, 2003;Pérez & Navalón, 2003;Snodgrass & Vanderwart, 1980;Székely et al, 2004). Spanish picture names met the following criteria: (a) they consisted of a single word; (b) they were present in the Spanish database BuscaPalabras (Davis & Perea, 2005); (c) they had no other meanings with higher frequency usage to be confused with (e.g.…”

“…Many studies also find that frequency of exposure to the names of objects has a reliable effect on picture naming (Alario et al, 2004;Barry et al, 1997;Bates et al, 2003;Cuetos et al, 1999;Ellis & Morrison, 1998;Snodgrass & Yuditsky, 1996;Székely et al, 2004; though see Bonin et al, 2002;Dell'Acqua et al, 2000;Pind & Tryggvadottir, 2002). Word frequency is typically estimated using printed frequency counts based on text corpora, although subjective ratings of word familiarity can be used to estimate spoken word frequency (Gernsbacher, 1984).…”

“…Materials Images were chosen from the International Picture Naming Project (IPNP: Szekely et al, 2004), which provides information about the naming of 520 black-andwhite line drawings of common objects, some of which are freely downloadable. Where images could not be obtained directly from the IPNP, suitable images were selected from a commercial clip art package.…”
