A new method for separating first row transition metals and actinides from synthetic melt glass

Abstract: A new method was developed for separating Co, Fe, and Sc from complex debris matrices using the extraction chromatography resin DGA. The activation products Co-58, Mn-54, and Sc-46 were used to characterize the separation of the synthetic melt glass solutions. In the separation scheme that was developed, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Sc, and Ti were separated from the rest of the sample constituents. In this paper, the synthetic melt glass separation method, efficiency, recoveries, and the length of procedure will be discus… Show more

“…The tests performed on DGA resin in HCl and HNO 3 agree well with previously published efforts that characterized Ti and Sc uptake in these acid matrices [29][30][31]. Resin performance in the H 2 SO 4 system shows trends similar to the HCl system, with low Sc retention at low acid concentrations and a rapid increase starting around 1 M. These results establish that Sc can be purified from bulk Ti using DGA resin in any of these acid systems at concentrations of 3-7 M. A significant decline in Sc retention was observed in the presence of even small amounts of HF in the three primary acids.…”

“…The data for Ti agrees well with what Pourmand and Dauphas found during their comprehensive examination of DGA in 2010 [29]. Previous investigations of Sc uptake on DGA resin in HCl and HNO 3 show similar trends, though the absolute D w values differ slightly [30][31][32].…”

“…The separation of the target source from scandium usually involves several processes of selective precipitation, filtration, and washing, aimed at maximizing extraction and purification [ 124 , 125 , 126 , 127 , 128 ] ( Table 3 ). Different approaches have been used by various research teams in the course of these processes [ 129 , 130 , 131 , 132 ].…”
