The (229)Th nucleus possesses the lowest-energy nuclear isomeric state. Two widely accepted indirect measurements of the transition energy place it within reach of existing laser capabilities. Direct searches for the isomer deexcitation have proven elusive despite extensive effort over the past couple of decades. There is now a growing interest in finding this unique transition because of its potential applications in nuclear, atomic, condensed matter, and optical physics, quantum information, metrology, and cosmology, including the development of a new type of clock based on this nuclear transition. In this Letter we report the first direct observation of the deexcitation of the lowest-lying isomeric state in (229)Th. By collecting (229)Th recoils following the alpha decay of (233)U into MgF(2) plates and measuring the subsequent light emission, we have isolated the isomer deexcitation and measured the transition's half-life to be 6±1 h. Through comparison measurements with (235m)U isomer, we found that the observed (229m)Th deexcitation signal originates from photon emission rather than internal conversion electron emission. This discovery lays the groundwork for optical and laser spectroscopy of (229m)Th nuclear isomer and the development of a (229)Th nuclear clock.

has performed a set of absolute Fission Product Yield (FPY) measurements. Using monoenergetic neutron at energies between 0.5 and 14.8 MeV, the excitation functions of a number of fission products from 235 U, 238 U and 239 Pu have begun to be mapped out. This work has practical applications for the determination of weapon yields and the rate of burn-up in nuclear reactors, while also providing important insight into the fission process. Combining the use of a dual-fission ionization chamber and-ray spectroscopy, absolute FPYs have been determined for approximately 15 di↵erent fission products. The dual-fission chamber is a back-to-back ionization chamber system with a 'thin' actinide foil in each chamber as a monitor or reference foil. The chamber holds a 'thick' target in the center of the system such that the target and reference foils are of the same actinide isotope. This allows for simple mass scaling between the recorded number of fissions in the individual chambers and the number of fissions in the center thick target, eliminating the need for the knowledge of the absolute fission cross section and its uncertainty. The 'thick' target was removed after activation and-rays counted with well shielded High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors for a period of 1.5-2 months.

Thermoresponsive nanocomposite thin films composed of alternating layers of silica and polymerized N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) or NIPAM plus dodecyl methacrylate (DM) hydrogels were prepared by surfactant-directed evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). During EISA, the organic monomers partition within the hydrophobic domains of a lamellar mesophase. In-situ polymerization via a free radical process results in a 1-2 nm thick hydrogel phase sandwiched between layers of silica oriented parallel to the substrate surface. The thermoresponsiveness of PNIPAM is preserved in this confined environment, and the polymeric layers reversibly swell and deswell by a factor of 2 in water upon temperature changes around the transition temperature of PNIPAM (32 degrees C). The composition, mesostructure, and environmental response were studied by detailed NMR, TGA, and SAXS analyses.
