A New Measure of Binge Drinking: Prevalence and Correlates in a Probability Sample of Undergraduates

Abstract: Background-A standard measure defines binge drinking as the consumption of 5 or more drinks in a row for men (4 or more drinks for women) on at least 1 occasion during the past 2 weeks. A revised operational definition of binge drinking was developed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 2004 and incorporated the duration of the drinking episode in addition to the quantity of alcohol consumed. This study compares the standard and new binge measures for overall and subgroup prevalence rat… Show more

“…Recently, another study [34] determined that the definition by Wechsler's group [30,31] and the NIAAA proposal [33] are strongly correlated with a similar pattern of association among the variables of sex, race and age and the initiation of consumption. These authors believe that quantity and duration should be considered, as suggested by the NIAAA, because the sole inclusion of the quantity variable underestimates the HAC prevalence and is insufficiently sensitive in discriminating between problematic and nonproblematic patterns of consumption.…”

“…In our own studies of binge drinking, we have used a more behavioural and potentially more conservative approach based on the Alcohol Use Questionnaire (Mehrabian & Russell 1978), which incorporates speed of drinking, and the behavioural measures, 'numbers of times being drunk in the last six months' (with drunkenness defined as loss of coordination, nausea and/or the inability to speak clearly, or blackout) and the percentage of times getting drunk when drinking . Although differences in definition of binge drinking may give rise to some confusion both in the scientific literature and among the general public, it is likely that the multiple definitions tap into closely related phenomena, albeit with different sensitivity (Cranford et al 2006). …”

“…The second divided adolescents into regular drinkers versus not (e.g., Reifman et al, 1998) or heavy episodic drinkers versus not (Cranford et al, 2006;D'Amico et al, 2001) based on single alcohol use behaviors.…”
