A new genus and species of bothriurid scorpion from the Brandberg Massif, Namibia, with a reanalysis of bothriurid phylogeny and a discussion of the phylogenetic position of Lisposoma Lawrence

Abstract: Abstract. Brandbergia haringtoni, a new genus and species of bothriurid scorpion, is described from the Brandberg Massif, northwestern Namibia. A cladistic analysis, based on seventy-four morphological characters scored for thirty-one exemplar species representing all genera of Bothriuridae, and one genus from each of the six remaining families of Scorpionoidea, was conducted to test the phylogenetic placement of the new genus and whether it affects the internal relationships of Bothriuridae. The available dat… Show more

“…Stockwell 1989), the significance of lung characters for higher level systematics has been largely overlooked in the recent literature (e.g. Prendini 2000Prendini , 2003Soleglad and Fet 2003). The latter authors scored the shape of the lung spiracle, but did not recognise characters in its marginal structure or in the lung lamellae themselves.…”

“…The discrete data set derives from a previous cladistic analysis of the genus (Ojanguren‐Affilastro & Ramirez, ), which in turn was partially based on characters defined by Prendini (, ) and Ochoa () to assess phylogenetic relationships among genera of the family Bothriuridae and the superfamily Scorpionoidea. The data set was reduced to 79 characters by eliminating those that turned invariant under the present taxonomic sampling.…”
