A new extractant impregnated resin for separation of traces of uranium and thorium followed by their spectrophotometric determination in some geological samples

Abstract: A new extractant-impregnated resin, alizarin red S -impregnated XAD-2010, is used as an adsorbent to separate and preconcentrate U(VI) and Th(IV) ions prior to their spectrophotometric determination. Various instrumental techniques such as elemental analysis, FTIR, and SEM analysis were employed for full characterization of the synthetic extractant. Optimization of the adsorption and elution conditions of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions using synthesized alizarin red S -impregnated XAD-2010 were studied. Langmuir isothe… Show more

“…Also, the crystals of salt occupy the superficial area of the adsorbents at high salt concentrations, which diminish the adsorbent available to interact with the analytes and play a very negative role by decreasing the recovery. The same behavior agrees with that reported earlier using other adsorbents (Hosseini-Bandegharaei et al 2013;Fouad et al 2019;Orabi et al 2019). The absorption on three adsorbents of U(VI) increased when the pH of the adsorption media raised and reached a maximum at pH 3-5.…”

“…A comparison of q max values demonstrates that synthesized Cs-BFPA, Cs-BFB, and Cs-BODB exhibit a decent aptitude for uranium adsorption. The sorption capacity of CBASB derivatives (Cs-BFPA, Cs-BFB, and Cs-BODB) for uranium(VI) was significantly higher than those acquired from the literature in Table 3 (Oren et al 2000;Venkatesan et al 2004;Wang et al 2009;Kadous et al 2010;Morsy 2015;Orabi et al 2016Orabi et al , 2020Ali and Nouh 2019;Fouad et al 2019;Xiao-teng et al 2019;Orabi et al 2021). Also, as shown in Table 4, although the sorption capacity of CBASB derivatives resin is lower than some novel adsorbents, e.g., graphene oxide (Sun et al 2015), their regeneration has not been considered.…”

“…The aqueous layer was broken up, and the number of dyes remaining in the aqueous phase was determined photometrically. 45 The number of dyes kept on the A-PH-CMC/MWCNT nanocomposite solid phase was counted from the difference in absorbance between dyes in the aqueous phase before ( A b ) and after ( A f ) being taken out. The amount of sorption (% E ), number of dyes kept at equilibrium ( q e ) per unit mass of solid sorbent (mol g −1 ) and the distribution coefficient ( K d ) of sorbed analyte onto the A-PH-CMC/MWCNT nanocomposites were computed as described.…”

“…The values of ΔS are 66.05 J mol −1 K −1 for U and 67.62 J mol −1 K −1 for Th. Negative Gibbs free energy ΔG value (− 32.17 kJ mol -1 for U and − 32.63 kJ mol -1 for Th) demonstrated the spontaneous property of this adsorption [47,[85][86][87].…”

“…To achieve accurate and precise determination of both elements, spectrophotometric method using the proper sensitive and selective dye was merged with solid phase extraction technique in this work. In the pursuance of many researches on the extractant impregnated resins (EIRs) applications [27,28,[42][43][44][45][46][47], this work converges on the eclectic separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of thorium and uranium in their bearing rocks using a new EIR containing Amberlite XAD-2010 resin beads impregnated with chrome azurol S. The new EIR adsorbent manifested eminent selectivity for thorium and uranium sorption from aqueous solutions after adequate optimization.…”
