A New Distributed Application and Network Layer Protocol for VoIP in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: In this work a new protocol for Voice over IP (VoIP) transmissions in wireless ad-hoc networks is proposed. Distributed architecture is necessary when dealing with dynamic environments, such as ports or battlefields, where creating infrastructures becomes expensive or impossible. Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) are based on a peer-to-peer approach and each node participates in the organization of the whole network. VoIP over MANETs is a challenging issue due to the intrinsic distributed nature of the existing… Show more

“…The security is another of the main issues that needs to be taken into account in this field, due to the intrinsic insecure environment in which they are used. Many proposals need reliable routing operations to offer services like VoIP, live video streaming, etc., as proposed by the authors in [5]. The energy is not an issue for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), while the security side of these network is not widely investigated, so approaches that improve the security are applicable to these networks too.…”

“…Many proposals need reliable routing operations to offer services like VoIP, live video streaming, etc., as proposed in Ref. 13. Mobile nodes in MANETs are subject to constraints on the energy available for routing and security operations, therefore many proposals concern approaches with the aim of analyzing and reducing the energy consumption.…”

“…The communication is performed on a hop-by-hop basis with limited range wireless links with no existing pre-established infrastructure. However, the main characteristic of these networks is a decentralized organization and the unpredictable mobility of nodes, which can often lead to unstable routing paths [2][3][4][5] . Because of this, routing in such a dynamic environment is one of the most discussed and debated questions.…”
