“…Seven sites record a rapid increase in Arecaceae (palm) and Bombacoideae (silk cotton tree and relatives) pollen (see Table ). Living species in these groups are major constituents in seasonally dry subtropical and tropical forests (Carvalho‐Sobrinho et al., 2014; Joyal, 1996; Linares‐Palomino & Alvarez, 2005; Pennington et al., 2009), suggesting a shift to warmer, drier, or more seasonally dry climates during the PETM. The concurrent reduction at middle paleolatitudes of pollen with affinity to Cupressaceae (see Table ), which require wet substrates (Averyanov et al., 2009; LePage, 2003), is also consistent with a shift to drier conditions.…”

“…Endemic to Brazil, Pachira endecaphylla is widely distributed in the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, where it occurs in seasonal forest environments. It has also been recorded in the states Alagoas, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí, Sergipe and Tocantins (Carvalho-Sobrinho et al 2014, Duarte 2015b. In the RCE the species was encountered only in the municipality of Jeremoabo in an area of anthropized Caatinga.…”

“…These analyses, however, also suggest that Eriotheca and Pachira as currently circumscribed are not monophyletic, and further molecular and taxonomic sampling is necessary to resolve the relationships between these two genera (Carvalho-Sobrinho et al 2016). Until such sampling is completed, it would be premature to place Eriotheca in synonymy with Pachira and as a consequence new species have been described in both genera while maintaining their traditional circumscriptions Carvalho-Sobrinho 2013;Carvalho-Sobrinho et al 2014b, 2015Macedo et al 2018).…”
