A New Coumestan from Tephrosia calophylla.

Abstract: Tephrosia PERS. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) is a large tropical and sub-tropical genus estimated to contain 300 species.1) Tephrosia calophylla BEDD. is a perennial undershrub found widely in Talakona forest of Andhra Pradesh, South India.2) The genus Tephrosia is known to elaborate a rich variety of flavonoids and isoflavonoids.3) Phytochemical investigation of the whole plant of this hitherto uninvestigated species has led to the isolation of a new coumestan, tephcalostan (1) together with two known flavon… Show more

“…The different sugar moieties of 7 and 8 were further identified as glucose and rutinose respectively according to their 1 H and 13 C NMR. On the basis of the above analysis, they were identified as kaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 7 ) [34] and kaempferol 3-O-β-D-rutinoside ( 8 ) [35] respectively.…”

“…Our subsequent phytochemical research on the 80% EtOH extract, which showed antioxidant activity by DPPH, has led to the isolation of nine known flavonol glycosides, myricetin 3- O -β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 1 ) [ 20 ], myricetin 3- O -rutinoside ( 2 ) [ 21 ], myricetin 3- O -β-D-glucopyranoside ( 3 ) [ 22 ], quercetin 3- O -β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 4 ) [ 22 ], laricitin 3- O -β-D-glucopyranoside ( 6 ) [ 23 ], kaempferol 3- O -β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 7 ) [ 24 ], myricetin 3′- O -β-D-glucopyranoside ( 8 ) [ 11 ], kaempferol 3- O -β-D-glucopyranoside ( 10 ) [ 25 ], and complanatuside ( 11 ) [ 26 ], one isoflavone glycoside 3′-hydroxy-4′-methoxyisoflavone-7- O -β-D-glucopyranoside ( 5 ) [ 27 ], and a decadien derivative, (2 E ,4 E )-8-hydroxy-2,7-dimethyl-decadien-(2,4)-disaeure-(1,10)-dioic acid ( 9 ) [ 28 ]. The structures of all isolated compounds were identified by extensive spectroscopic methods including MS and 2D NMR and comparison with the reported data.…”

“…Forty-two isoflavones, 94 – 13 5 , have been isolated and identified from this genus [5,22,64,65,66,67,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91]. Among them, 111 – 125 were identified as rotenoids [74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82], 94 and 126 – 13 5 were identified as coumestan derivatives [22,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91].…”
