A New Capacitor-Less Buck DC-DC Converter for LED Applications

Abstract: In this paper, a new capacitor-less DC-DC converter is proposed to be used as a light emitting diode (LED) driver. The design is based on the utilization of the internal capacitance of the LED to replace the smoothing capacitor. LED lighting systems usually have many LEDs for better illumination that can reach multiple tens of LEDs. Such configuration can be utilized to enlarge the total internal capacitance and hence minimize the output ripple. Also, the switching frequency is selected such that a minimum rip… Show more

“…Consequently, nowadays LED lights take an important place in our daily lives and have become a viable alternative to conventional low efficiency light sources like incandescent, CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) and HID (high intensity discharge) lamps. LED lighting systems have better characteristics than conventional lighting systems such as energy saving, long life spans and color rendering [1]- [8] and they play an important role in future indoor as well as outdoor lighting applications. To operate properly with respect of energy saving, high efficiency and minimum electric constraints, these light sources demand a specific driver.…”

“…To address this issue, energy storage (ES) systems with the ability to store and dispatch electricity are connected to compensate for the generation fluctuations of RESs. The battery has become a candidate of grid-tie large scale RESs power plants with its increasing deployable capability and reducing cost [3]. Additionally, the high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission method is preferred for large-scale renewable power plants that have a large output power scale and long-distance transmission because HVDC transmission has the advantages of low cost and high transfer efficiency [4][5][6] compared with the conventional high voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission.…”
