A new bacteriochlorophyll from brown-colored chlorobiaceae

Abstract: A new bacteriochlorophyll has been isolated by thin layer chromatography from all strains of the brown-colored Chlorobiaceae Chlorobium phaeobacteroides and Chlorobium phaeovibriodes. The new bacteriochlorophylle--like the bacteriochlorophylls c and d--represents the major amounts of bacteriochlorophyll a. Bacteriochlorophyll e can be differentiated from the bacteriochlorophylls c and d by its absorption maxima in aceton and its different Rf-value in the thin layer chromatogram. The structure of the new bacter… Show more

“…This difference is consistent with the suspected taxonomic composition of the layers. Typically, green Chlorobiaceae (BChl6> inhabit higher light environments than brown forms (BChl e) (Gloe et al 1975;Madigan 1988).…”

“…It seems that a false-positive signal for pheopigment is produced by BChl d. The absorbance maximum of BChl from green sulfur bacteria in acetone has been shown to shift from 653 nm to 658 upon acidification (Gloe et al 1975). If BChl concentrations were sufficiently high, this shift could increase absorbances in mixed field samples measured at 665 nm after acidification and 80 120 160 200 0 40 80 120 160 200 0 SOh2-(peqliterl) I I I I 6 12 18 24 30 0 6 12 18 24 thereby elevate the pheopigment estimate.…”

“…Extraction of bacteriochlorophylls and separation on silicagel was done as described by Gloe et al (1975). The identification of the bacteriochlorophyll was carried out by cochromatography of the bacteriopheophytins of E. halochloris strain BN 9850, Rhodopseudomonas viridis strain BN 170 and Rhodospirillum rubrum strain Ha; the absorption spectrum of the separated bacteriopheophytin was measured.…”
