“…No structural analyses that document Mesozoic deformation have been reported from the region, and sedimentary data permit interpretations that the basins may have been related to compression, extension, or strike-slip deformation involving basement rock. Coarsegrained, basement-derived strata are common in compressional basins (Heller et al, 1988;Fillmore, 1991;DeCelles and Giles, 1996), extensional basins (Miall, 1981), and strike-slip basins (Long, 1981;May et al, 1993;Ridgway and DeCelles, 1993;Ryang and Chough, 1997). Axial paleocurrent indicator directions are common both in underfilled foreland basins and extensional basins (Burbank et al, 1988;Jordan, 1995).…”

“…The role of strike-slip deformation in Mesozoic basins of western Mongolia is difficult to ascertain, but the apparent continuity of Lower to Middle Jurassic meandering fluvial facies across the central and southern portion of the study area suggests the development of a regional basin system that was at that time larger than most strike-slip basins. Strike-slip basins are generally relatively small features, with lateral dimensions of tens of kilometers (e.g., Long, 1981;May et al, 1993;Nilsen and Sylvester, 1995;Ryang and Chough, 1997). Sm-Nd isotopic provenance results from the Jargalant location suggest a possible source region as distant as southern Siberia.…”

“…Their geometry is represented by rhombshaped graben, rhomb-shaped half-graben, a series of coalescent basins (e.g. Schubert 1980;Zak & Freund 1981;Aydin & Nur 1985;Sylvester 1988;May et al 1993) or a more complex combination of fault blocks (Moore 1969;Junger 1976;Howell et al 1980;Kocák et al 1981;Royden 1985;Fodor 1995;Sims et al 1999;Nemčok et al 2005).…”

“…As seen in deeply eroded outcrop exposures or from subsurface geophysical surveys, double restraining bends and releasing bends commonly define positive and negative flower structures respectively, and strikeslip bends or 'duplexes' in plan view (Fig. 1;Lowell 1972;Sylvester & Smith 1976;ChristieBlick & Biddle 1985;Harding 1985;Woodcock & Fisher 1986;Dooley et al 1999), although considerable structural variation and complexity occurs (Barka & Gulen 1989;May et al 1993;Wood et al 1994;Waldron 2004;Barnes et al 2005;Decker et al 2005;Parsons et al 2005). Single bends commonly have horsetail splay fault geometries in plan view, with strike-slip displacements terminally accommodated by oblique-slip and dip-slip faulting (McClay & Bonora 1997).…”
