A New Adaptive Self-Tuning Fourier Coefficients Algorithm for Periodic Torque Ripple Minimization in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM)

Abstract: Torque ripple occurs in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) due to the non-sinusoidal flux density distribution around the air-gap and variable magnetic reluctance of the air-gap due to the stator slots distribution. These torque ripples change periodically with rotor position and are apparent as speed variations, which degrade the PMSM drive performance, particularly at low speeds, because of low inertial filtering. In this paper, a new self-tuning algorithm is developed for determining the Fourier Se… Show more

“…Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is intuitively an excellent choice for torque ripple minimization [6]. Using the periodic nature of torque ripple and based on the component's harmonic distortion in the time domain of the compensation signal, the Fourier series controller coefficients can be adjusted with the aim of reducing the torque ripple in a PMSM, thus allowing for smoother operation [7].…”

“…In reference [12], an open-loop ILC controller is designed, which makes the design of ILC simpler, but it still has the problem of slow convergence. Reference [13] designs an ILC based on the frequency domain, which can suppress periodic disturbance of several frequencies at the same time. However, it is difficult to combine with other controllers in the system.…”

“…In this type of research, two major trends can be observed: (1) the reduction in torque ripples by the control system side [1][2][3][4][5] and (2) the improvement of the torque quality at the design stage by the optimization of the electromagnetic circuit of the electrical machine. In the first trend, the current harmonic injection is one of the commonly applied techniques [1][2][3]. Due to the technical difficultly of directly measuring the torque ripple in such approaches, torque observers are usually employed [2].…”
