A New 10-Connected Coordination Network with Pentanuclear Zinc Clusters as Secondary Building Units

Abstract: An unusual 3D 10-connected metal−organic framework [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (1,4-ndc) 4 (1,4-bix) 2 ] (1, 1,4-ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; 1,4-bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1ylmethyl)benzene) has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Topological analysis indicates that 1 is a 3D 10-connected self-penetrating framework based on [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH) 2 ] pentanuclear zinc clusters as secondary building units with the short Schlafli symbol of 3 6 4 34 5 3 6 2 . This represents highly connected a … Show more

“…In 5 , two symmetry-related μ 3 -OH – groups (symmetry code: − x + 2, − y + 1, − z + 1) connect five Zn(II) ions to form a [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH – ) 2 ] 8+ cluster unit, which can be regarded as two [Zn 3 (μ 3 -OH – ) 2 ] 4+ triangles sharing a common Zn2 vertex. Such triangles are fit together by four carboxylate groups to make up the pentanuclear [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH – ) 2 (COO) 4 ] cluster (Figure b), which is similar to some reported examples. , Therefore, five Zn(II) ions within the pentanuclear clusters are totally coplanar, in which the Zn···Zn distances are 3.418 Å (Zn2···Zn5), 3.262 Å (Zn2···Zn1), and 3.522 Å (Zn1···Zn5). Similar to 4 , each L – anion adopts μ 4 -η 1 :η 1 :η 1 :η 1 -coordination mode III (Scheme ) and links two pentanuclear clusters to generate a 1D loop chain, in which two Zn1, two Zn5 ions, and two L – anions form a new {Zn 4 O 4 N 2 C 18 } 28-member ring, containing a large pore with a size of ca.…”

“…Ligand-based luminescence properties are useful in the detection of metal ions . Because of enhanced stability of metal complexes compared to organic counterparts, coordination polymers are used as photoluminescent materials . Generally d 10 -metal coordination polymers exhibit photoluminescence properties .…”

“…The 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H 2 NDC) ligand as an important aromatic carboxylic ligand has shown an excellent bridging role in constructing novel MOFs with interesting optical and magnetic properties as well as gas storage ability because of its various coordinating modes (Table ), high symmetry, and structural rigidity . However, up to now much more research on the coordination chemistry of the H 2 NDC ligand has been focused on transition-metal-based MOFs, and investigations on NDC-bridged Ln MOFs are very rare. For example, in 2004, Gao’s group reported two three-dimensional (3-D) MOFs, [Ln 7 (μ 3 -OH) 8 (NDC) 6 (OH) 0.5 (CH 3 COO) 0.5 (H 2 O) 7 ]·4H 2 O, constructed from unprecedented heptanuclear [Ln 7 (μ 3 -OH) 8 ] 13+ (Ln = Ho, Yb) cluster units .…”
