A network approach toward literature review

Abstract: This study introduces a method that uses a network approach towards literature review. To employ this approach, we use hypotheses proposed in scientific publications as building blocks. In network terms, a hypothesis is a directed tie between two concepts or nodes. The network emerges by aggregating the hypotheses from a set of articles in a specific domain. This study explains the method and its potential for reviewing literature in a particular domain. As a proof of concept, we provide a case study reviewing… Show more

“…It can be used to study the composition of networks as a whole or the strength and direction of ties between individuals within a given network. Although SNA has been commonly used to assess the ties between researchers via citation records [29,30], it has been applied to the findings literature itself much less frequently [31]. SNA provides several benefits over a traditional descriptive or narrative literature review.…”

“…An alternative approach is found in bibliographical reviews which include several hundred papers but cover only certain areas available either from abstracts [65] or analyzing data from bibliographic databases [54].None of these studies measure the papers in their literature reviews according to how frequently they have been cited. However, in one study [77], authors apply a network approach to literature review by aggregating results of studies that used the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) [57] to predict citizens' adoption of egovernment. This approach provides an overview of how frequently certain hypotheses were tested and validated.…”

“…Our literature search was driven by a network approach [ 35 ]. We built on related reviews, as well as our prior knowledge of the literature.…”
