This paper describes the importance of including a Human-Centred Design (HCD) approach for successful university–industry collaboration. We detail user surveys and user evaluation techniques to engage end-users for the rejuvenation of manufacturing industries through sustainable product development. There are numerous studies describing the importance of university–industry collaboration; however, very few portray the detailed working relationships necessary to fulfil both the university and the industry agenda. This paper explores a joint project between a prominent Melbourne-based university and a government organisation from Malaysia. The intention was to innovate a range of furniture for Malaysian dormitories to stimulate the local manufacturing sector and provide high-value product applications for Malaysia’s abundant timber sector. By detailing a HCD approach, we reveal how to better direct the design outcomes to accurately reflect the research intent. This is detailed through a case study showing how the research data was translated into final product concepts influenced by end-users and collaboration with the industry stakeholders. The resulting products are a range of sustainable, modular dormitory furniture with a direct route to market. Finally, we provide the lessons learned and suggestions for developing sustainable products through university–industry collaboration.

Tulisan ini membahas tentang inovasi desain motif parang Batik Danar Hadi. Batik Danar Hadi adalah salah satu produsen dan sekaligus museum di Surakarta yang dikenal secara lokal, nasional, dan bahkan internasional. Inovasi desain motif adalah keniscayaan bagi pelaku industri batik. Sebagai produsen batik Danar Hadi melakukan kreasi dan inovasi desain motif. Salah satu di antaranya adalah inovasi desain motif parang. Inovasi desain motif parang juga dimungkinkan karena kekayaan koleksi Museum Danar Hadi sebagai sumber rujukan atau referensi visual. Dua belas jenis motif parang yang dijadikan sampel penelitian menunjukkan bahwa inovasi desain motif parang terjadi pada beberapa aspek, yakni vokabuler visual, nomenklatur motif parang, pola pembagian bidang parang, pola warna, dan teknik pembuatan.

Being affected by the rapid change in internal and external environments in past years, the fiercer competition has resulted in the declination of toy industry. For the sustained-yield management, toy manufacturers have been searching for strategies. In the consumer-oriented era, an enterprise has to precede statistics education of toy designers so that the market survey could accurately analyze consumer needs to establish differential products for creating product value and meeting consumer needs. The supervisors, employees, and customers of Traxxas are the major research subjects for the questionnaire survey in this study. Total 300 copies of questionnaire are distributed and 236 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 79%. The research results reveal significantly positive correlations between 1.product design and purchase intention, 2.statistics education and product design, and 3.statistics education and purchase intention. According to the results, suggestions are proposed, expecting to assist domestic toy manufacturers in the future development of product design for the sustained-yield management.
