“…Mycoplasma synoviae-negative chickens in the USA (Olson & Solomon, 1968). In this report a virus, referred to as virus arthritis agent, was associated with swelling and oedema of hock joint, wing joint and digital flexor tendons.…”

“…Five 'prototype' Japanese strains isolated from the digestive tracts of chickens by Kawamura and Tsubahara (1965) were obtained from Dr. J.B. McFerran. Three strains were obtained from Dr. D. Thornton, EK 2286, isolated in Germany from chickens with anaemia and liver and spleen lesions (Vielitz and Landgraf, 1974), the FaheyCrawley virus from a respiratory disease (Fahey and Crawley, 1954), and WVU 2937, an American strain from tendons of arthritic chickens (Olson and Solomon, 1968). Strain VAA from a chicken with viral arthritis was obtained from Dr. N.O.…”

“…In Brazil the incidence of arthritis in broilers and layers and reovirus isolation from arthritic fluid was reported by Bottino et al (1975). Since the first report in the United States of a field case of viral arthritis/tenosynovitis by Olson and Solomon (1968), the incidence has been reported in broiler chickens in Maine (Johnson and van der Heide, 1971 ;Johnson, 1972), Texas (Glass et al, 1973), and Connecticut (van der Heide et al, 1974). Virus could be isolated from the leg lesions and no Mycoplasma synoviae infections could be found in these cases.…”

“…NATURAL OCCURRENCE Field observations of clinical viral arthritis/tenosynovitis were first reported by Olson and Solomon (1968) in Mycoplasma sywovrâe-negative broiler chickens in the United States. It was not until Mycoplasma synoviae-negative chickens were produced under commercial conditions that it was recognised that avian reovirus could produce tenosynovitis lesions without the presence of mycoplasmal or bacterial agents.…”
