BACKGROUND: Foliar application of highly concentrated ZnSO 4 fertilizer improves Zn biofortification in wheat grains. However, excess ZnSO 4 •7H 2 O concentration (≥5 g kg −1 , w v −1 ) has been associated with leaf burn and yield loss, necessitating Zn sources with a high threshold concentration. The aim of this study, based on a 2 year field experiment conducted on wheat cultivated in acidic and alkaline soil, was to identify a suitable Zn formulation with a high Zn concentration or efficient adjuvant to achieve optimal Zn biofortification levels without compromising agronomic performance.RESULTS: There was a continued increase in the Zn concentration in wheat grains and a decrease in grain yield with an increase in the concentration of the Zn foliar sprays in both soil types examined. Wheats treated with chelated Zn foliar sprays -Zn glycine chelate (ZnGly) and Zn-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ZnEDTA)had less foliar injury than those treated with unchelated Zn fertilizers. Furthermore, irrespective of wheat cultivars and soil types, ZnEDTA applied to wheat at a concentration of 10 g kg −1 achieved the highest grain Zn concentration without negatively affecting the wheat performance. Adjuvant type and concentration caused no significant variation in grain Zn concentration.CONCLUSION: Overall, without foliar burn, wheat treated with 10 g kg −1 ZnEDTA foliar spray had the best performance with regard to grain Zn concentration and grain yield, which could have considerable implications for Zn biofortification of wheat grain.

Changes in herbicides recommended for the use in Russian Federation between 2000 and 2022 are analyzed. The main directions of iimproving chemical control of weeds are identified based on the integration of domestic market with the world market. Only a limited number of active ingredients was introduced in Russia during the last decade, including pinoxaden, thiencarbazone-methyl, piroxulam, sodium flucarbazone, topramezone, diclosulam, tembotrione, and metamifop. Improved formulations of herbicides such as colloidal solution concentrate with increased penetrability due to the particle size reduced by an order of magnitude became widely available. Premix herbicides were developed based on tribenuronmethyl, metsulfuron-methyl, florasulam, clopiralid, picloram, imazamox, imazapyr, imazethapyr, etc.Parameters for herbicide application were optimized to consider phenology of weeds. Novel technologies were implemented, such as growing hybrids resistant to certain active ingredients to allow their application during crop vegetation.

Managing herbicide resistance in China

Since its initial introduction in the late 1950s, chemical control has dominated weed management practices in China. Not surprisingly, the development of herbicide resistance has become the biggest threat to long-term, sustainable weed management in China. Given that China has followed the same laissez-faire approach towards resistance management that has been practiced in developed countries such as the United State of America, herbicide resistance has rapidly evolved and steadily increased over the years. Previously, we carried out a systematic review to quantitatively assess herbicide resistance issues in China. In this review, our main objective is to focus on mechanistic studies and management practices to document the 1) history of herbicide application in China; 2) resistance mechanisms governing the eight most resistance-prone herbicide groups, including acetolactate synthase inhibitors, acetylCoA carboxylase inhibitors, synthetic auxin herbicides, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase inhibitors, protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors, photosystem I electron diverters, photosystem II inhibitors, and long-chain fatty-acid inhibitors; and 3) herbicide resistance management strategies commonly used in China, including chemical, cultural, biological, physical, and integrated approaches. At the end, perspectives and future research are discussed to address the pressing need for the development of integrated herbicide resistance management in China.
