Managing a school department should be tilted towards achieving set goals and creating value for the education system. There seems to be poor performance in social sciences departments that are headed by females in secondary schools. This inefficiency at departmental levels has negative impact on the overall performance of schools. Therefore, the aim of this study is to unearth issues related to management of social sciences departments by female heads in some secondary schools in Zambia. The study followed a descriptive research design to generate evidence on experiences of female headed social sciences departments in some secondary schools. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews from a total sample of 25 participants. The data was analysed using a thematic approach with elements of comparative analysis especially across the gender spectrum. The findings show that subject loads, constrained resources especially teaching aids, managing high numbers of staff in the departments as well as teacher absenteeism were main challenges faced. It was also found that the high rate of permission, to be out of school, seeking behaviours to stay away from work by some teachers compromised teaching thereby testing the leadership of these female heads. Additionally, the limited office space or lack of adequate infrastructure for operations such lesson plan preparations hampered effective management of social science department. Therefore, the study concluded that challenges experienced by female social sciences heads of department are both structural and material. It is recommended here that the Ministry of Education should increase funding in social sciences departments as they represent the largest in schools. Also, the school administrators to be organizing and offering periodic training to the Heads of departments in various subject areas on their roles so as to get acquitted with new changes in the school system.

“…Καθώς το ελληνικό εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα συμμορφώνεται όλο και περισσότερο με στρατηγικές που ευνοούν την αγορά και την εμπορευματοποίηση της εκπαίδευσης, εν τούτοις φαίνεται να αναδύονται άτυποι αλλά γνήσιοι ηγετικοί ρόλοι από την πλευράτων μαθητών/τριών, που επικεντρώνονται στις ιδέες της δημοκρατίας και της κοινωνικής δικαιοσύνης. Η έμφαση που προκύπτει από τον αυτόβουλο χαρακτήρα ανάληψης ηγεσίας από μέρους τους στην οικοδόμηση επαρκών και ποιοτικών διαπροσωπικών σχέσεων, κάνει την ηγεσία να μετατρέπεται περισσότερο σε μια 230 Σόρκος, Χατζησωτηρίου διαδικασία και όχι σε μια προσωπική υπόθεση ενός τυπικά υπευθύνου (Harris & Lambert, 2003), με αποτέλεσμα να διαδίδονται και σε άλλα μέλη της σχολικής κοινότητας οι πρακτικές ηγεσίας. Η σύγχρονη βιβλιογραφία έχει επανειλημμένα εστιάσει στον ποικίλο ρόλο των μαθητικών φωνών και στον τρόπο επίδρασής τους στις διαδικασίες της αλλαγής και της σχολικής βελτίωσης. Ωστόσο, δεν έχουν διερευνηθεί οι τρόποι με τους οποίους τα ίδια τα παιδιά ερμηνεύουν τους ρόλους τους ως ηγέτες, ιδιαίτερα σε περιβάλλοντα που χαρακτηρίζονται από πολιτισμικό πλουραλισμό. Η έρευνα που παρουσιάζουμε επικεντρώνεται στον αυτόβουλο χαρακτήρα της ανάληψης ηγεσίας εκ μέρους των μαθητών και μαθητριών, ώστε να μετεξελιχθούν σε ισότιμους συμπαραγωγούς μιας νέας παιδαγωγικής ατζέντας λήψης αποφάσεων. Το δείγμα μας αποτελούνταν από 36 μαθητές και μαθήτριες που φοιτούσαν σε τέσσερα επαρχιακά σχολεία δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης του Νομού Φθιώτιδας. Για τη συλλογή των ερευνητικών δεδομένων αξιοποιήθηκε η ποιοτική μέθοδος με τη χρήση ημιδομημένων συνεντεύξεων. Από την επεξεργασία του ερευνητικού υλικού αναδύονται οι αυτόβουλες κοινωνικο-ακτιβιστικές πρωτοβουλίες και δράσεις που αναλαμβάνουν οι μαθητές και οι μαθήτριες, που προοιωνίζουν αφενός την επίτευξη ενός κοινωνικού και εκπαιδευτικού μετασχηματισμού και αφετέρου τη μετατροπή τους από «πολίτες σε αναμονή» σε αυθεντικούς συνδιαμορφωτές των σχολικών πολιτικών. Τα αποτελέσματα που καταγράφει η παρούσα έρευνα δύνανται να έχουν πολλαπλές επιπτώσεις τόσο στο πεδίο της εκπαιδευτικής πολιτικής όσο και σε αυτό των σχολικών πρακτικών.
