The sedative effects of music on healthy and sick individuals are known for centuries. Nowadays, nursing has used the efficacy of music therapy in interventions. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of music, which the patients undergoing a coronary angiography for the first time listened to during the intraoperative period, on the level of anxiety in the patients. The study was conducted experimentally as a pretest/posttest control group design. Data collection form; state-trait anxiety inventory, CDs and CD player were used. Inventories were applied to the patients before the process. The study group (100 patients) listened to music throughout the intervention, whilst the control group (100 patients) listened to no music. At the end of the process, all patients were given the same state anxiety inventory once more. The data was assessed by number, percentage, mean distribution with the paired t-test and t test. It was found that the difference between the mean state anxiety scores obtained before and during the coronary angiography were significantly higher in the study group (4.04 ± 1.15) than the control group (2.01 ± 0.10) (p = 0.000). It was concluded that the music listened to during the coronary angiography process had an impact on the intraoperative anxiety levels of the patients.

ÖzetAmaç:Manyetik rezonans görüntüleme (MRG) tibbin tüm alanlarinda hizla gelişen önemli bir tani araci olmuştur. Fakat son çalişmalarda MRG uygulanan hastalarin %37'sinde şiddetli anksiyete ve korku oluşumu raporlanmiştir. Çalişmamizda hastalara video bilgilendirme yaparak anksiyete düzeylerini azaltmayi amaçladik. Gereç ve yöntem: Aralik 2015 ve Şubat 2016 tarihleri arasinda 1.5 Tesla MRG cihazi kullanarak yaptiğimiz çalişmamiza klinisyen tarafindan MRG için yönlendirilen 100 hasta dahil edildi. Hastalar video bilgilendirme grubu (müdahale grubu, n=50) ve kontrol grubu (n=50) olmak üzere ikiye ayrildi. Tüm hastalarin anksiyete düzeyleri, Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygi Envanteri (STAI) ve Görsel analog skalasi (GAS) uygulanarak belirlendi. Daha önce hazirlanmiş olan 3 dakikalik video, müdahale grubundaki hastalara MRG öncesinde izletildi. Video sonrasi bu gruba STAI-S ve GAS tekrar uygulandi. MRG sonrasi ise tüm hastalara belirlediğimiz 7 sorudan oluşan anket uygulandi ve verdikleri cevaplar kaydedildi. Bulgular: Yaptiğimiz araştirma sonunda video bilgilendirme yapilan hastalarla video bilgilendirme yapilmayan hastalar arasinda MRG öncesi anksiyete değerleri arasinda anlamli bir fark bulunmadi. Video bilgilendirme sonrasinda ise bu hastalarin GAS ve STAI-S skorlarinda anlamli bir azalma görüldü (p=0.002). MRG sonrasi yapilan ankette; müdahale grubundaki hastalarin kontrol grubuna göre MR süresi ile ilgili endişelerinin anlamli bir şekilde daha az olduğu (p=0.016) ve beklediklerinden daha iyi geçtiği görüldü (p=0.022). Sonuç: Maliyet kaybina yol açmayan ve zararsiz olan bu uygulamanin hasta anksiyetesini düşürmede başarili olduğu gösterildi. However studies recently reported that severe anxiety and fear occurs in 37% of patients who underwent MRI. In our study, we aimed to reduce patient anxiety by video information. Materials and methods: Between December 2015 and February 2016 using a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, 100 patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups; video information group (n = 50) and control group (n = 50). Anxiety levels of the patients were determined by applying State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). A three-minute video, which was prepared earlier, was watched by the patients in video information group before MRI. After video information, STAI-S and VAS were applied again. Subsequent to MRI, all patients were given a questionnaire consisting of seven questions and their responses were recorded. Background: Evaluation of the pre-procedural process prior to endoscopic procedures has never been conducted. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional, multilanguage survey was administered to outpatients undergoing endoscopy at a large, diverse county hospital that examined patients' pre-procedural preferences. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between patient preferences and several patient-related variables. Results: 128/156 outpatients completed the survey. The majority of respondents were female (53.1%), did not speak English (61.7%), were of Asian (39.1%) or Hispanic (29.7%) racial background, and had a mean age of 56.1 ± 15.7 years. Most patients underwent colonoscopy (48.4%) with 90.6% of patients knowing the indication for their procedure. While waiting for their endoscopic procedure, 42.2% of patients preferred waiting in a gurney while 28.1% preferred to wait in a chair. In terms of being comfortable wearing a hospital gown and sitting in a chair or gurney in the pre-procedure area, mean patient anxiety scores were 5.2 ± 3.3 and 6.1 ± 3.2, respectively (scale of 1 -10). Race was associated with several pre-procedural patient preferences; Hispanics were less comfortable than Asians wearing a hospital gown while sitting in a chair with other patients prior to their procedure (OR = 0.3, CI 0.1 -1.0) while Whites and African-Americans were less likely than Asians to prefer sitting in a chair as compared to a gurney before their procedure (OR = 0.09, CI 0.008 -0.9 and OR = 0.07, CI 0.007 -0.8, respectively). Patients who had undergone a prior endoscopic procedure were less comfortable wearing a hospital gown and sitting in a chair (OR = 0.3, CI 0.1 -0.7) or gurney (OR = 0.4, CI 0.2 -1.0) in the pre-procedure area. Conclusion: A patient's race and having had a prior endoscopic procedure were the most powerful predictors on pre-procedure patient preferences while sex, type of endoscopic procedure and patient knowledge of the indication for their procedure were not. Our study highlights the importance of patient preferences and factors involved in the pre procedure process at a large, diverse county hospital.
