A Multiscale Mixed Finite Element Method For Vuggy and Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

Abstract: Vugs, caves, and fractures can significantly alter the effective permeability of carbonate reservoirs and should be accurately accounted for in a geomodel. Accurate modeling of the interaction between free-flow and porous regions is essential for flow simulations and detailed production engineering calculations. However, flow simulation of such reservoirs is very challenging because of the co-existence of porous and free-flow regions on multiple scales that need to be coupled.Multiscale methods are conceptuall… Show more

“…The degree of effective saturation of water may be described using various constitutive models to link saturation degree with hydraulic pressure (Tuli and Hopmans, 2004). For the demonstrative purpose, the van Genuchten model was used in this study (Gulbransen et al, 2009;GhanbarianAlavijeh et al, 2010):…”

“…The storage of CO2 in sub-or supercritical state in geological media involves an active interaction amongst the solid matrix, country rock and two fluid phases [11]. Mass conservation equation (also known as the continuity equation) relates the pressure p and the total (interstitial) velocity, .…”

“…The Stokes-Brinkman equation is proven to be equivalent to the Darcy and Stokes equations (Brinkman 1949;Popov et al 2007;) if appropriate parameters are selected in the corresponding flow regions. As a result, the need for extra interface conditions is eliminated, allowing a seamless transition between the vugs and porous media (Gulbransen et al 2009;He et al 2015a;Popov et al 2007).…”
