A Multimethod Investigation Into Physical Activity in Midlife Women

Abstract: Consensus was reached regarding activities that could be valuable in promoting sustained PA in midlife women. Choosing convenient sites and popular instructors further facilitates sustainability. Building relationships with key community partners is essential for sustainability. Community-based participant involvement in study design is a critical element in developing a healthy living intervention.

“…38 Others adapted validated measures to determine menopause status, 51 Viljoen and Christie 52 used age to determine postmenopause, whereas Froehle et al 42 included serum hormone assays to confirm menopause. The most common description of menopause was 12 months of consecutive amenorrhea, 34,35,39,42,43,50 although several studies provided no clear definition, 36,37,40,41,[44][45][46][47]49,53 but some used measures (eg, Green Climacteric Scale) of menopausal symptoms. 44,46,47,50 Participant's baseline physical activity was mostly assessed using self-reports, but one study used energy expenditure 41 and another, a pedometer.…”

“…The studies reviewed covered three research objectives. Six studies aimed to identify barriers and/or enablers associated with physical activity, 37,[39][40][41]46,47 and five studies specifically investigated the barriers and enablers to an intervention or program. 34,43,[50][51][52] The remaining nine studies explored the relationship of specific elements on physical activity behavior (eg, kinesiophobia, mood, exercise preferences).…”

“…The current study is a secondary analysis of raw data from a parallel-randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing the impact of a web-based worksite intervention on PA behaviour and cardiovascular health among nurses working in a tertiary-care cardiovascular institute [ 32 ]. A web-based worksite intervention strategy was chosen to address common barriers to PA, including lack of time and fatigue [ 33 , 34 ], that may be exacerbated by the long hours and irregular shifts of nurses [ 35 ]. The purpose of this study was to assess whether work-related characteristics (i.e., number of hours worked per week, shift schedule, shift length, work role) and mood states (i.e., tension, depression, anger, confusion, fatigue, vigour) predicted changes in total weekly moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) and average daily step-count among nurses who participated in a 6-week web-based worksite intervention.…”
