A multi-layer metadata schema for digital folklore collections

Abstract: Digital folklore collections are valuable sources for studying the cultural and oral tradition of a country. The main difficulty in managing such collections is material heterogeneity (handwritten texts, photographs, 3D objects, sound recordings etc.) that imposes different digitization, description and maintenance practices. A multi-layer metadata model for the description of a digital folklore collection is presented. The proposed meta-data policy considers a collection as a hierarchy of entities and combine… Show more

“…Civil society groups were highly successful in promoting standards proposed to international platforms. For example, proposals forwarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Learning Technology Standards Committee (IEEE LTSC) meant that standards have been increasingly led by professionals and users in the field and less by industry (Lourdi et al ., ; Frank et al ., ; King et al ., ; Fisher et al ., ).…”

Civil society associations, particularly the European Forum for the Arts and Heritage and (from 2010 onwards) Culture Action Europe, were closely involved with policy formation throughout.…”

“…Over the years, numerous ontological and metadata representations have been proposed to allow further investigation, studies, and research in dance heritage, e.g., [44], [53], [58], [92], and [102]. An extended research about metadata in digital folklore collections, and the main metadata standards to represent cultural heritage collections is given by Lourdi et al [69]. The digitization and documentation of folk dancing consists a large variety of different and complex data, including descriptive data, with regard to the description of the dance being performed, the history, notations, but most importantly, the multimedia recordings.…”

“…Their article discusses data type handling and compares standards. Lourdi, Papatheodorou, and Nikolaidou (2007) discussed the multi-layer metadata model needed for the variation in materials in their Greek folklore collections at University of Athens. Ma (2006) provided the metadata implementation steps for digital projects at the Pennsylvania State University Libraries.…”
