Background: Cervical vertebrae have a typical feature that is presence of foramen bilaterally in their transverse process which is named as foramen transversarium through it passes vertebral artery, vertebral vein and sympathetic plexus of nerves. Among these cervical vertebrae typical cervical vertebrae have a typical bifid spine along with foramen transversarium. Deformation and variations of this foramen may affect the anatomical course of vascular and neural structures, and consequently may cause pathological conditions.

SUMMARY:The seven cervical vertebrae found in the human body are classified into typical and atypical vertebrae. Their transverse processes contain foramen transversarium (FT) and traditionally there is one foramen present on each side, of similar size. However, variations of this foramen regarding its shape, size, number, laterality, location and osteometric characteristics have been documented in the literature. This morphological and morphometric study was conducted on 126 cervical vertebrae (82 typical and 44 atypical) obtained from the osteological bank at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal to produce a database which may serve as a useful guideline to medical personnel. There were variations observed regarding shape, number of FT, laterality and position, which have not previously been reported. The most types of variations were evident in the typical cervical vertebrae, then secondly, the seventh cervical vertebrae. The axis vertebrae did not display any accessory FT or variations.

Bu çalışmanın amacı kuru kemik servikal vertebralarda aksesuar FT insidansını araştırmaktır. Gereç ve yöntem: Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anatomi Anabilim Dalı Laboratuvar'ına ait 81(seksenbir) adet yaş ve cinsiyetleri bilinmeyen kuru kemik servikal vertebra incelendi.Tüm servikal vertebralar aksesuar FT varlığı açısından makroskopik olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular:Servikal vertebraların 10'unda (%12.34) aksesuar FT saptandı.Bunlardan 2'sinde (%2.47) çift taraflı,8'inde (%9.87) tek taraflı aksesuar FT olduğu gözlendi. Tek taraflı olanların 6'sı (%75) sağda, 2'si (%25) solda gözlendi. Sonuç:Bu varyasyonların bilinmesi bu bölgeye yapılacak cerrahi girişimlerde hem ameliyat yöntemini seçmede hem de postoperatif komplikasyonların gelişmesini önlemede cerrahlar için önemlidir.
