A molecular approach to the genus Alburnoides using COI sequences data set and the description of a new species, A. damghani, from the Damghan River system (the Dasht-e Kavir Basin, Iran) (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae)

Abstract: The molecular status of nine species of the genus Alburnoides from different river drainages in Iran and additionally by seven species from Europe was assessed. mtDNA COI gene sequences from freshly collected specimens and available NCBI data revealed four major phylogenetic lineages. Based on the results, a distinct taxon from the Cheshmeh Ali (Ali Spring), a Damghan River tributary in the endorheic Dasht-e Kavir basin, northern Iran, which is the closest sister to Alburnoides namaki (Namak Lake basin) + Albu… Show more

“…Furthermore, most of the loci showed significant deviation from Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. This can be explained by the presence of null alleles, genetic drift, and inbreeding (Jouladeh-Roudbar et al 2015;Arthofer et al 2018). In Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province in Iran C. aculeata is an endemic freshwater fish species, Therefore, the population diversity and genetic diversity are influenced by many factors, such as habitation, anthropogenic activity, founder effects, and bottleneck effects (Behera et al 2018;Khoshkholgh and Nazari 2019).…”

“…A study using a set of both nuclear (ß-actin, RAG1 and S7) and mitochondrial (cytb) markers (Stierandová et al 2016) supported the divergence of the “ prespensis+devolli+fangfangae ” cluster from A. ohridanus (lineage VII) but subdivided most part of the Albanian samples into three lineages (VII, IX and X) naming them “ A. prespensis species complex”. This term has been in use since then (e.g., Juladeh Roudbar et al 2016, Barbieri et al 2017).…”

“…Individuals of this genus display a small to medium size, an elongated and almost cylindrical body, a round snout with a lower and crescent-shaped mouth, a horned lower jaw, usually an edged upper lip continuous with the snout, and a needle disk with a free posterior margin (Esmaeili, Sayyadzadeh, & Eagderi, 2016). These fish have sucking mouth feeding on algae, plankton, and small invertebrates (omnivores), and are usually kept in aquariums (Esmaeili, Sayyadzadeh, & Eagderi, 2016). So far, no lepidological studies have been conducted on several Omani cyprinid fishes including Garra sharq.…”
