A Modular Approach for Diesel Engine Air Path Control Based on Nonlinear MPC

Abstract: This article presents a systematic approach to realize highly dynamic control strategies for the air path of diesel engines. It is based on grey-box models of individual air path components, designed to be applied in nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). Specifically, they are suited for algorithmic differentiation and gradient-based optimization. This modular approach allows to derive models for a variety of complex air path systems and can be identified with a low amount of measurement data. An NMPC str… Show more

“…A calibration intensive explicit formulation was avoided by using a linearized plant model with fast sampling rate. In Hanggi et al, 11 a nonlinear model predictive controller was used for the airpath control with gray box models. The references for the airpath were predefined, however in the current work presented in this paper the references for the airpath were calculated online by a high-level nonlinear MPC controller and the references are tracked by a low-level linear MPC controller with emission constraints.…”

“…The air path is modeled by an existing mean-value model which has already been validated. 39 Other forms of air-path models can be used as long as the interactions to the cylinder model remain unchanged. For the layout of engine A, previous analyses showed no advantages for a steady-state optimization of HP EGR when compared to LP EGR.…”
