A Modified van Genuchten-Mualem Model of Hydraulic Conductivity in Korean Residual Soils

Abstract: According to the Mualem capillary model, hydraulic conductivity (HC) is integrated theoretically from the function related to soil water retention curves (SWRC). On the other hand, based on the smooth type of SWRC, the predicted HC function decreases abruptly near saturation, which often challenges the stability of numerical solutions. To improve the Mualem HC, van Genuchten's function for SWRC was modified within the range of low matric suction. The van Genuchten-Mualem HC was then modified to integrate the p… Show more

“…The analysis used databases in which the parameter l in the van Genuchten‐Mualem equation (van Genuchten, ) had a standard value of 1/2. In recent years, a number of experimental works have been published indicating that parameter l may not always be equal to 1/2 (Oh et al, ; T. Wang et al, ) and it can take both positive and negative values.…”

“…Not only intensity and duration of rainfall but also hydraulic properties of soils near the surface, that is permeability, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, and soil-water characteristics, have a great effect on the rainfall infiltration [7,8]. In particular, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is an important factor in understanding the hydraulic characteristics of unsaturated soils [7].…”

“…Not only intensity and duration of rainfall but also hydraulic properties of soils near the surface, that is permeability, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, and soil-water characteristics, have a great effect on the rainfall infiltration [7,8]. In particular, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is an important factor in understanding the hydraulic characteristics of unsaturated soils [7]. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function has been estimated by a variety of methods through the use of the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) or the simplified model because of the difficulty of experimental measurements [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…7 Over recent years, the above-mentioned models have been widely modified or improved by various researchers. [8][9][10][11] Based on the measured soilwater characteristic curve (SWCC), Li et al 12 described the relationship between the unsaturated loess coefficient of permeability and the matrix suction or water content by using CCG model. By combining SWCC models (i.e.…”
