A Modified Tie Technique for Securing Endotracheal Tubes

Abstract: The new double hitch was superior to all conventional knots tested. It did not slip under any conditions and therefore may be of use to prevent unintentional extubation, particularly in the ICU setting.

“…Systematic reviews of fixation methods for tracheal intubation in adults and infants were conducted by Gardner et al (Gardner et al, 2005) and Lai et al (Lai et al, 2014) in 2005 and 2015, respectively, but these studies failed to identify the optimal fixation method for tracheal intubation because of the low quality and heterogeneity of the included literature. With advances in technology, catheter materials and fixation methods have long been updated and new fixation methods have emerged (Walters et al, 2018). Maybe, the optimal technique for fixation of the tracheal tube needs to be further explored.…”

“…It is a typical medical device used to keep the airway open to ensure oxygen, medicine, or anesthetics can be delivered [1][2][3]. It is often used to assist those who have pneumonia, emphysema, heart failure, collapsed lungs, or serious injuries in breathing [4][5][6][7][8]. This tube will be inserted into the patient's nose or mouth and into his trachea.…”

“…The uncuffed tubes use is limited to mostly pediatric patients [11][12][13]. According to the medical procedure, endotracheal intubation is the placement of a tube into the trachea (windpipe) in order to maintain an open airway in patients who are unconscious or unable to breathe on their own, as shown in Figure 2 [2,14,15]. There had been some previous research studies on the endotracheal tube and respiratory care, the role of the endotracheal tube cuff in microaspiration, and the management of a severed endotracheal tube [3,4,6,8,9,11].…”
